About this product

Product Information

"Highly recommended as one of the very few books on the subject worthy of being used an an authoritative guide." -- Design "Illustrators, sculptors, and taxidermists who draw or model animals will welcome this new revised edition." -- Natural History Here are 288 remarkably lifelike drawings of animals, furnishing artists and students with an easy-to-follow method of instruction in the drawing of horses, dogs, lions, cows and bulls, stags, and goats. So detailed and so accurate are these drawings that this book has long been a classic work of its kind. The animals are shown in three ways: external full views and dozens of details (paws, head, eyes, legs, etc.); beneath-the-skin drawings of musculature and of the positions and insertions of each muscle; and skeleton drawings of the bone structures that support and determine surface contours and configurations. In addition, special cross-sections dissect those portions of the animal -- such as the head and limbs -- that are most important to the artist. For this edition, Lewis S. Born of the American Museum of Natural History collected 25 plates from George Stubbs's Anatomy of the Horse, long unavailable; Straus-Durckheim's Anatomie Descriptive et Comparative du Chat; and Cuvier and Laurrillard's Anatomie Compar e . These plates, as fully annotated as the plates that make up the original book, supplement Ellenberger, Baum and Dittrich with anatomical drawings of the monkey, the bat, the flying squirrel, the rat kangaroo, the seal, and the hare. Mr. Lewis also provided a new preface and added to the annotated bibliography, which now contains 66 items.

  • Simply the Best!!!!

All the information an artist could wish for when studying horses, dogs, lions, and cattle, from hair tracts to cross-sections, to dentition...not to mention skeletons and muscles in detail and from every angle. I've had this book since I was a child, and finally replaced my well-worn copy with this beautiful fresh exact copy of my original--welcome, since it NEVER needs the slightest change; it's absolutely perfect as it is. The cover illustration doesn't really show how beautifully clear and usable the actual Ellenberger plates are. Additional plates by Stubbs, Straus-Durkheim, and Cuvier illustrating the anatomy of animals as varied as seals and bats contribute to the artists knowledge and appreciation of the diversity of nature. I've studied this book for decades and will study it ...

  • An atlas of Animal Anatomy for Artists

This book is a must have for those who want to draw an animal correctly. I purchased this book to further study the structure of the horse. There are fantasy animals I would like to be able to create but with out a firm foundation in the real there is no way to do that. This book gives a great way of studying the effects of movement on the bones and muscles of an animal. What is seen in this book is key to drawing believable creatures.

  • Love It!

can't wait to use! I will find this very useful in drawing and understanding the anatomy of the animals. they are very interesting to look at and read. Books is new and in in perfect shape.I highly recommend.

  • Animal Anatomy

The Animal Anatomy book is a great choice, for artist who like paint illustrated graphical battles with horses, or similar artworks. Great deal, but much poses of animals need for a similar book. Thats it why I didnt got an excellent rating for this book
