Hitachi / HGST TravelStar are the best laptop drives period. I have dozens of them going back 20+ years and they still work. If you get a Thailand made drive it was made in HGST's Global Storage Facility which they bought from IBM several years ago and this is a top quality facility. I'm expecting that the later china sourced ones are just as reliable. The bad thing is that Western Digital bought Hitachi a few years ago and eventually subsumed the HGST brand into WD's brand so no more newly made HGST drives. That's why I seek out the 2-6 year old unused Hitachi / HGST drives like these. Hopefully WD had not lowered the quality standards of the HGST drives, I did just buy a couple WD high capacity (2TB) laptop drives. We will see how those fare.

My 2-year old ThinkPad Leveno T430's hard disk was damaged, but my PC was never dropped or hit. I bought this hard disk, and installed Win XP, which could use/recognize about 128 G of the the total 500 G capacity, after formatting it with 2 partitions. I then installed Win 7 32 bits on the other partition. Win 7 can use/recognize all 500 G. Since I found that 4 G memory (with ~1.2 G used by video graphics card) is a little too small for Win 7 32 bits, I then bought and installed another piece of 4 G memory chip. But I found that Win 7 32 bits can utilize up to 4 G memory. I then installed Win 7 64 bits on the partition for XP. Then Win 7 64 bit can use/recognize all 500 G hard disk and 8 G memory. I activated Win 7 64 but with the same product key for Win 7 32 bits and it worked. Both the hard disk and the memory are used ones but both worked great so far. Frank 1/4/2015Read full review

Had a few problems with the drive at first but it turned out that the HD was not at fault. I used a backup program and it went and partitioned the drive and when finished, it told me the drive was only 276 GB. I foound that the program altered the drive so I went in and removed the partition and reformatted it and it came back upt at 500 GB just as advertized. I have been using it with no problems since then. It is a good working HD.
I needed a new HDD for my laptop. I looked at SSD's and for the age of my laptop and the way I use it the cost was to high. The Hitachi is plenty big (500 GB) and the 7200 rpm speed makes it fast. I've had Hitachi HDD's in the past and they are great. For the price its the way to go.
Installed and working well [with WD "Ice-Pack" 3,5inch adapter] in HP8000 Elite SFF desktop computer. Fast response time; very quiet; tolerates well case heat buildup.
