This collection is even more extensive than the Purple Rain Deluxe release of a couple of years ago. Pretty much ALL those hissy bootleg tracks you had are represented here. Perhaps not *all* the versions of them that you'd have wanted (Prince routinely recorded, finished and kept at least 3 to 4 versions of most songs he ever made). And what's REALLY sadly missed here is the inclusion of the original version of "Extra Loveable". This is because it contains the line "I'm sorry, but I'm just going to have to rape you", and this is the post #MeToo generation, where everything, even in a song, is bizarrely taken LITERALLY by weirdos on Twitter. Prince was merely pushing things to the edge - he did say in an interview back then in the early 80's he wanted to push things as far as he could push them. That's ALL he was doing. But we live in sad, freak-infested times, where "Baby, It's Cold Outside", is called "a rape song". I can tell you now, what you're missing out on in that track alone is some of the most blistering guitar work Prince did in that era, over a funky drum machine beat, and minus the dreadful rap that's in the version he released a couple of years before he died. The presentation of this set is first class - from the shiny, rather seductive purple box, to the artwork, to the tons of extra photos. To buy this digitally would be a joyless experience compared to owning the CD's and all the photos that go with them. The Estate has even gone the extra mile and found pretty much ALL of Prince's handwritten lyrics to the songs, and printed those in the booklet. There's also a lot of guff and waffle by the usual self proclaimed 'Prince experts' but even that doesn't spoil it. If you're a long term fan like me you probably already own this set but if you're curious as to if it's worth it yes it 100% is - you'll see Prince was far more than the played-to-death "1999" in his sound and style. You also get a concert video and audio - though considering it's only a DVD version, and not formatted for modern viewing, it's actually more pleasurable to listen to the audio of it.Read full review

I bought this set mostly for the unreleased/vault tracks and simply to have and to hold the whole package as a physical item. It's a great thing to have if you're a fan of Prince's early eighties' work. Having bought Prince's Crystal Ball album some years ago, the deluxe Purple Rain reissue and the super deluxe Sign O The Times set very recently, I've personally found his vault tracks either hit or miss - they vary so much. But I really like most of the unreleased tracks included here, so I'm particularly glad I got this. Some of the unreleased songs are as good as his album tracks of the time. It's interesting to hear earlier versions of songs on this set that emerged as b-sides or album tracks years later - even as late as Graffiti Bridge. The concert CD is great too (not seen the DVD concert yet). (I paid almost twice the original retail price that it was available for from standard music outlets earlier this year. So I can't really rate it as 'good value' for the price I paid - I just wanted it. But it be fair, the price I paid was much better than what other folk are asking for.)Read full review
