I've only had this little camcorder for 48 hours, and it is my first. Having said that I used a full-size VHS camcorder a few times about 20 years ago. I wanted something small and light enough for the wife to use, and compatible with iMovie '09, and after many failed bids on various Canon, Sony, and Panasonic came up trumps with the FS100. True, it's not HD, but the picture quality is decent enough and for the same money the only HD cameras available have digital-only zooms, which are themselves inferior. Its small size & light weight does have a downside however: when using the zoom, it isn't very easy to hold still. However, given that the zoom is 45x, which is nearly 8x more powerful than that on my dad's old Panasonic M7, which only went to 6x, so I recommend either a tripod or monopod if you are planning to focus on a static object from a distance. Being a keen photographer who's breaking in to the pro scene, I wanted a camera which would yield good results easily, and also help relieve my wife's boredom when I'm shooting at a wedding. Last year, I got her to video the speeches at a colleague's wedding, at which I was the photographer, but having to use a still camera for this meant the movie footage wasn't the best. So the Canon should redress this, and allow me to include video into the DVD 'slide-show', which chronicles the couple's whole wedding. Still picture quality isn't going to be fantastic, but should be more than adequate for on-screen use. All in all, it's simple to use, but has enough features to satisfy an SLR user like me. Go on, treat yourself to one! Phil-lewinphotography www.phil-lewinphotography.co.ukRead full review
Pros: low cost, super light weight, high quality results in natural light, 5* stereo audio, external mic input, no tape drive (so no body noise), incredible zoom, 3 hour battery, cheap storage media, fast USB import to laptop, easy editing in Apple Mac imovie. I bought 2 cameras to make my first movie. Great fun. Cons: grainy image in low light.
THE CANON FS 100 IS JUST THE THING YOU NEED ITS SMALL COMPACT AND PACKED WITH FEATURES. VERY EASY TO USE AND LIGHT WEIGHT THE RECORDING AND PICTURE QUALITY IS VERY VERY GOOD FOR A CAM THIS SIZE EXCELLENT STUFF HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
An excellent video camera all round. Really good quality movies, and even the stills come out well. One really great feature is the ability to plug in an external mic, which makes the sound quality really amazing. This is actually the second one we've bought after the battery died on the first one, which just stopped charging all of a sudden. We got an external battery charger, which let it charge once more, but that was it. However, we now realise we could have just bought a new battery and that would have solved the problem. Anyway, it's a great video camera, which is why we decided to go with the same one when the battery went. Fits in your hand nicely. Awesome zoom.
I specifically bought the Canon FS100, for Semana Santa, a week of parades like only the Spanish can do. I found it easy to use, did everything I wanted. The quality of the recording is very good even in the dark. The zoom worked a treat. The still photos are of the highest quality. The playback on my television direct from the camcorder is excellent but I have not yet mastered the editing and downloading to a DVD. The battery life was not brilliant, but I charged it up a couple of times, and I have just purchased a spare battery.
Very nice camera.....not up to DV standards of picture quality but the zoom lens is amazing and picture quality Ok for such a cheap camera. It's amazingly small aso can be carried around easily. I've played back some edited stuff on my 42" plasma and it's very watchable. Battery life is good and the SD card makes it a doddle to get onto the PC and edit footage. I may save up for the HD model but for now I'm satisfied :-))
Great Camcorder for the size and and price, Video time is amazing for a 4gb card and the still photos are the tops, Easy to use and easy to install on your pc or laptop and you have the top name of Canon
This was excellent value with a year's warranty. The price at play.com and other retailers was much more expensive.
