Sometimes the greatest journey is the distance between two people. Based on the novel by W. Somerset Maugham, The Painted Veil is a love story set in the 1920's about a young English couple, Walter (Edward Norton), a middle class doctor and Kitty (Naomi Watts), an upper-class woman, who marry for the wrong reasons and relocate to Shanghai, where Kitty falls in love with someone else. When Walter uncovers her infidelity, in an act of vengeance he accepts a job in a remote village in China ravaged by a deadly epidemic, and takes her along. Their journey brings meaning to their relationship and gives them purpose in one of the most remote and beautiful places on earth.

    An unforgettable Love Story

    The Painted Veil is based on the novel by W. Somerset Maugham. It is a very moving love story about a young English couple. It is set in 1925 in China during a horrendous cholera epidemic. The photography is magnificent, the acting is without doubt some of the best I have seen for a long while. The main actors Naomi Watts and Edward Norton play their difficult roles in a truly convincing way. You feel their anguish and feel for each of them. The understated and sometimes terse dialogue conveys their emotions very effectively and so much feeling is conveyed without the need for words. The supporting cast is superbly chosen as each character shows a different aspect of the situation in the Chinese province. The piano music is played by Lang Lang.
