    Finally, something decent from SyFy

The other night I was wallowing in self-pity, having another one of my science fiction withdrawal syndrome attacks, when I grabbed my laptop and in desperation began a life-or-death search for something, anything to relieve the pain. I found a description of EXPANSE and it intrigued me. Reviews looked pretty good but since I did not have a cable tv hookup I searched my ROKU and found a channel where I could view the first episode free (with commercials). Wow, I liked it, except for the dang commercials which ruined the experience. Way too many interruptions (7) for a total of twenty-something minutes of commercials. Could not stand anymore of this. So, I bought the series on dvd. Glad I did. It is great. Special effects are great, actors are good, overall a great accomplishment by the SyFy channel who apparently decided to reel back on the wrestling a little bit and invest a little more to produce a quality series. The action gets off to a quick start with mysterious space ships appearing to torch off a conflict between Earth, the Martian Navy and the Outer Planets Alliance (OPA). There is a conspiracy going on to start an interplanetary war but who is behind it? Your 10 episode journey takes you on a ride between Earth, Eros, Ceres and space stations involving several factions in conflict and a sinister group which is playing one side against the other while simultaneously rushing to finish a secret project that will, well, can't reveal everything but I think you will enjoy it . It is not hard to detect the signs of a limited budget and the actors are not oscar-winners but I really enjoyed this series and I am looking forward to the next season which I recently heard has already been approved. WARNING: there is a tendency to binge-watch this series. I limited myself to 2 episodes a night but I am planning to run the entire series again pretty soon. The 10 episodes come on 3 dvds. I would not ever attempt to watch this again on the SyFy channel. The 7 commercial breaks will drive you absolutely beserk.

Your imagination is better than this.

Weak characters, even weaker science. I never understood why these people were fighting and why I should care about any of them. Okay, I only watched a few episodes, but that should be enough time to grab my attention. If you want to make a story about different states fighting over limited resources, just put it on Earth. The outer space scenario adds nothing important and merely distracts.

  • If you like your science fiction with good science then the Expanse season 1 is for you

It has been a very long time since science fiction has produced a TV season that isn't just special effects. Make no mistake the special effects are state of the art, the thing that gets you is the storey line. In season 1 I cannot find any plot holes that have ruined so many recent Science fiction series. It all makes sense. That is worth saying again The storey line makes sense, (so far still waiting on season 2) The one plot device that makes it all work is the Epstein drive, low mass high velocity continous acceleration, Exactely the thing need for inter planetary exploration and colonisation Everything else is extant technology, there are no force fields, teleporters or warp drives that turn so many science fiction films and series into mindless fantasy not science fiction. Gritty, realistic and extremely well thought out - cannot wait for my copy of season 2

  • The Expanse season one

Sci fi allows a lot of room for plot devices. In the distant future men can be like gods. Even in the time that Star Trek takes place there are incredible science breakthroughs. These gods of science always seem to have a way out of a situation but I feel it is our limitations that make us interesting. The Expanse takes place only 125 years in our future. Mankind is colonizing our solar system. There are no teleporters, food replicators, faster than light drives, hyperspace or other marvels of science. There are realistic characters dealing with plausible events and dealing with their own limitations. The Expanse is believable. The CGI and post production quality help make it believable. The plot and setting is believable. The character dialog is well written and believable. It all works together to make a very entertaining series and the Sci-Fi channel has reason to be proud.

  • A Must for SyFy Channel Fans

This is likely to be one of the most innovative series ever featured on the SyFy channel. The characters are interesting, the story is compelling, and the sets are great. Having read the books, I was pleased at how closely the series followed the story line as imagined by the author(s).

  • WOW~!

This one came out of nowhere...since I don't have netflix, cable or satellite TV. I immediately went back to pick up the second season...but it hasn't begun yet~! Just have to be patient...like I am when waiting for the next season of "The Walking Dead."

  • Expanse Expands

Good series that hooks you in and expands to new dimensions with each episode. Excellent watching. An amalgam of many scifi stories with large dollop of Blade Runner feel.
