His Catholic parents want him to be a priest, but Krupa rebels and moves away to make it as a musician in New York City, along with his friend Eddie (James Darren). He eventually falls for a girl, Ethel (Susan Kohner). But the seductions of other women, drugs and fame -- plus a lack of a formal music education -- put a strain on his personal and professional life, and Krupa must re-examine his goals. Sal Mineo stars as the gifted drummer who, as a young man, sets out for New York with his best friend (James Darren) and and his girlfriend, Ethel (Susan Kohner), to make it as a professional musician. Krupa quickly makes inroads and finds himself in the fast lane, where he begins a relationship with a jazz singer (Susan Oliver) who introduces him to the world of narcotics. Before long, he finds himself in jail. Upon his release, he transforms the sound of jazz percussion forever.

Not very original.
The film is dated but has a lot going for it. It was a chance for Sal Mineo to have a major role. Thus, it is a welcome addition to my film colection.

Outstanding film of the man who made drums a solo instrument.
I remembered seeing this movie with Sal Mineo as Gene Krupa many years ago and enjoyed it immensely. Krupa was the man who made drums a solo instrument. I know have that movie to add with “The Benny Goodman Story” and “The Glenn Miller Story.”
