This is a truly awful reamake of the b&w British film classic of the same name. The original was a typically gently English rural scene, with the juxtaposition of some really significant menace in the form of the children who have all mysteriously born simultaneously in the village. Whilst corny at times, It's as watchable now as it was when first released. This US remake represents all that's worst in Hollywood. It's as lame as it is contrived. The scene where the National Guard turn on each other with machine-guns says it all really. From subtle Sci-fi classic to gung-ho tinseltown excess in one stroke. The quality of acting is, frankly, abyssmal. This one's an all-time stinker.
I read the book The Midwich Cuckoos when I was at school and enjoyed it very much, this film is based on that story. Personally, I prefer the book, its a little more believeable!! The film is okay and has a good cast and a few parts that make you jump but some of the acting is very wooden! Its an okay film if you have a spare hour & a half to fill but I would be disapointed if I had paid good money to go and see it at the cinema!
Sinister aliens impregnate a number of women in a small American village. These same women later have some strange children who are very unlike any normal kids - THE EYES' - ARRGHHH, THE EYES'! Not one of the best outings from John Carpenter. Generally good direction from him, but it was coupled with a bland script and poor casting. Christopher Reeves is okay in the lead role, but doesn't really sparkle along side Kirstie Alley's Dr Verner. It has been proved that Carpenter can direct scary, and thrilling re-makes - see The Thing - but as i've said in most of my other reviews, the passion doesn't seem to be there. Any horror fan would probably agree that this film could've been directed by any mid-range director, rather than someone of Carpenters calibre. Very below par for him. This is an easily forgettable film, and only really worth having on DVD if you either haven't seen it or are a dedicated Carpenter completest.Read full review
