Sound quality and features are really good for those that are just starting out in filmmaking. For people on a budget, I recommend saving a little bit extra to get a used HD-P2 instead of a brand new Zoom H4n and bypass Zoom altogether because their preamp is extremely weak for most shotguns and other microphones, even at the highest setting. With the HD-P2, mics with 10mV output was not a problem and did not require an external mixer or preamp (although I see now why an external mixer/preamp like MixPre-D or 302 is always recommended though). A mixer would have been required with something like an AT897 shotgun mic on a H4n, unless you are fine with a noisy recording. Even with a hotter 4073a shotgun, it was still noisier compared to the HD-P2. Plus it is the only portable recorder that supports LTC and World Clock timecodes compared to Edirol, Marantz, etc at the same price point. Mine also had the Busman Audio mod, which makes a big difference on music recordings. The main thing I don't like is the gain knob that has both L and R kinda put together, instead of using separate pots.Read full review
I do classical music concert recording. This is the third one of these machines that I've owned. They are absolutely stone reliable, and the sonics are as close to "straight-wire" as you can get, along with the flexible feature set, especially at this price point. I don't use them with batteries, but if you do, they use standard AA batteries, not some expensive proprietary battery like the DR-100. Tascam should not have discontinued this model.

I had a Tascam DA45HR DAT for years in my studio and due to tapes being hard to get decided to get a tape-less recorder. The HD-P2 records on compact flash cards and you have many options to dump the work into your system. The 24bit 192khz recording is awesome! For all you that think it's not necessary, that's fine but I'll still be enjoying the high resolution anyways. You're well into ultrasonic range with 192khz sample rate. I believe the top end goes to 80 or 90khz. Sound you don't hear as much as feel. I'm really enjoy working with this machine and think it's powerful and portable. I use outboard mic preamps with input and output transformers and the sound is very satisfying.
