Wonderful book that I am so pleased to now have on my shelves. Hockney shares his thoughts on whether some artists have used camera obscura or camera lucida to make their paintings or drawings. He makes a very good case. The book is full of fabulous illustrations of very high quality and Hockney's commentary makes the paintings even more enjoyable. This is a great book for anyone studying Art History, for any art lover and for anyone wanting help on how to read paintings or look at the artist's craft.

I think this is a very important research project. It’s well written and easy to follow his logic and research methodology. Hockney is wonderfully modest about himself and refreshingly candid about the historic artistic community. It’s a great book for art lovers and dare I say for ‘professionals’ in the art market. As an amateur painter I found it was fascinating and useful. He’s just such an easy person to listen to. Thank you David Hockney.

As an art student it is a great look at how guilds and contextual technology has shaped the mark making of so called important Art History - Hockney's video of the book is also worth a watch -
