I bought first nokia n gage QD 2005 because of three marvellous games made by Red Lynx. Pathway to glory series and Highside were/ are among the best turn based games I have ever enjoyed. Atmosphere and style is still after seven years more than satisfactory. I bought this phone to be the spear one if original will get broken.
I Love this Nokia its brilliant, best phone I have. Very recommended. The Nokia is a hardy phone that can withstand anything. I would definitely but another.
This is clearly a niche market of people who want a console & phone but don't want to carry them both. The games are good and there are multiplayer modes etc, even online! The QD version irons out one particular problem and that is fact that you had to take out the battery to access the game. Who thought of that? So this version means that you can change games and mmc cards without having to power down your phone every time. This version also allows you to hold the phone normally against your head instead of holding it out like a shelf for someone to put an ornament on your ear. The only thing i think that nokia need to do now is encorporate a camera into the whole n-gage system as that would be the only thing stopping me from buying a new one. Because the phone is made to run games for large amounts of the time if the phone isn't used for gaming the battery seems to last forever without charging. I am not sure how long it lasts exactly but with a normal Nokia my battery was running out at the end of each working day whereas with this one i have forgot to charge it three days in a row and it was still going. I'll be honest with the games there are some not so good ones so make sure you do your research before you buy any games for it. Particularly good ones include super monkey ball, pandemonium, most of the sport related ones (if you like the sport in question), sonic (classic game) and strangely first person shooters and 3d car games. Some of these aren't brilliant for example i didn't like Red Faction but i did like Ashen. In general i would say if you like that genre on a home system then you'll probably like the compact version on the n-gage. If you want to know anything else definately go to the n-gage site and check out the games on offer and if you have an n-gage definately download the 3d version of snake on there, it's free and is an amazing multiplayer as well as single-player. Overview - In order to modernise the N-Gage it needs better graphics (to rival the PSP) and it also needs a camera to enable things that people commonly use their phones for in the modern age. This only hasn't happened becuause a new N-Gage hasn't been released. Other than that this is an excellent piece of kit and deserves merit for at least its convenience at fighting the boredom factor with compactability and addictive games if not its overall look and design.Read full review
The original N-Gage was better than the QD in almost every way. Nokia listened too much to the press reviewers and brought out a so called 'improved' model which was not an improvement in any meaningful way. It in fact omitted useful features - Out: FM Radio - Out: Tri Band - Out: MP3 player - Out: Dedicated Keys for launching the omitted applications. - Out: USB connector - In: Garish S60 theme which is hard to read - In: Irritating rubber covers for sockets and slots on the phone - In: Hot Swap MMC card suport (one positive feature does not help) The buttons are poor and its very very easy to get the phone into a non bootable state from which there is no return apart from a visit to a Nokia Service Centre. The N-Gage QD does have S60 underpinnings so application support is very good with hundreds of third party S60 applications out there and all the N-Gage game deck specific games work too of course. Its got Bluetooth, and a slightly less clunky headset arrangement than the original N-Gage but its no longer as good at stereo. My advice would be to find one of the original N-Gage phones - they are altogether better in every way in sustained use although the press reviews of them were unkind - the passage of time judges the original N-Gage less harshly. See my website and ebay listings for more information like this. Even though this review is negative about the QD, please mark the review as helpful especially if you saved yourself the trouble of buying one!Read full review
When Nokia first released their N-Gage game platform I was one of many technophiles who mocked the gadget. There were already well established and advanced portable gaming platforms out there and mobile phone gaming just didn't seem to appeal. When Nokia released their revised Nokia N-Gage QD I maintained my level of mockery. The new device didn't seem to add anything to the platform and seemed to actually lose out in some places. In between times something happened to draw my attention to the games available for the platform. A US based pen & paper roleplaying game publisher, Palladium Books got together with game designers Backbone to develop a software based version of their superb "Rifts" roleplaying game. I am a huge fan of the pen & paper Rifts game, having played it since the game was first released in the UK. The only problem with this excellent news was that the game was to be developed for Nokia's N-Gage platform only. There was uproar amongst some of Palladium's fans. Eventually, "Rifts - Promise of Power" was released to coincide with teh release of the QD platform. Those fans who bought the game reported it a roaring success. Other games released were of such a level as to make me reconsider my earlier derision of the platform. Skip a few years down the line and I manage to pick up a 2nd hand model on ebay. The games that came with it were surprisingly good for what is fundamentally just a phone. I found teh device difficult to use as a phone but I am a fan of HTC smart phones and my time using Windows Mobile devices has atrrophied my older Nokia skills. The device was simplicity itself to configure, a new PAYG SIM inserted I then set out to find accessories. I was concerned that the age pf the device would make it difficult to find accessories. Far from it! There are batteries, fascias, cases, games and chargers available on ebay AND from UK based retailers. I picked up a copy of the Rifts game for around £7 and have played it none-stop ever since. There are still some fairly exciting games out there for the platform and with talk of Nokia including the game platform in future Nokia smartphones there is likely some milage in the games as well. All in all a surprising little device and one I am unlikely to grow bored of.Read full review
