About this product

Product Information

Complex sociological themes run through this science-fiction classic, about three astronauts marooned on a futuristic planet where apes rule and humans are slaves. The stunned trio discovers that these highly intellectual simians can both walk upright and talk. They have even established a class system and a political structure. The astronauts suddenly find themselves part of a devalued species, trapped and imprisoned by the apes. But one, Taylor, manages to break out and, aided by a pair of compassionate chimps, makes his escape to an uninhabited section of land. However, during the trek Taylor makes a startling, unsettling discovery about the planet--and realizes he's come full circle. PLANET OF THE APES is based on the novel by Pierre Boulle with a screenplay co-written by Rod Serling.

  • Dated. Give it a pass unless you have a special interest in film history.

I first viewed this hokey piece of fiction at the theatre as a young man in the 1970s. A product of its time, the movie possesses an anti-war, anti-religious message. Watching it in 2013 however, I find it dated, out of place, and even comical. It's hard for me to believe this thing spun off so many sequels over the years. It's also hard for me to believe the greatest actor of the 1950s chose to run around in a sheepskin for two hours to make this silly thing. The Vietnam era cold war spawned this odd ball. It's no longer relevant, or even very good any more. Sorry - try "Lord of the Rings".

  • Great movie...

An astonishing and superb sci-fi movie from 1968 [Ufff long time ago....], which presents a group of astronauts crashing on a planet ruled by apes and humans are animals! As the plot thickens you will notice that the apes life, religion and science are just like us... In the end a more even terrifying truth is revealed for the only astronaut almost-unharmed to escape from the apes: That he was on Earth on the FUTURE!!! Excellent F/Xs at that time, superb performances and great scenery!!! A must have! A+++ Very rare on VHS format!
