Gravy Train, The (1990) We board the Gravy Train in Brussels, nerve centre of the European Community, where our nave and idealistic hero, Hans Dorfmann (Christoph Waltz) arrives to become assistant to Michael Spearpoint (Ian Richardson) the hard-nosed, insular Director of Information and Culture. Spearpoint plans to exploit the newly-liberated nations of Eastern Europe, and Dorfmann could well be the secret of his success. Meanwhile, the idealistic young German is courted by a number of prominent bureaucrats and entrepreneurs and seduced by the mysterious and glamorous Nadine. Is he being set up? If so, for what? Used and abused by all parties, he clings to his principles and fundamental belief in the basic good of humankind. But can he ride The Gravy Train without getting tarnished? The Gravy Train is a comic tale of wily bureaucrats and entrepreneurs and the solitary man whose idealistic principles may bring about their downfall. Gravy Train Goes East, The (1991) Post-glasnost jewel of the Eastern European crown, the Balkan state of Slaka is a tasty treat on The Gravy Train. Newly-liberated after years of Communist control, the little nation wants to embrace the European Community and share its bountiful fruits of capitalism and the free market. Animosity between the East and West is now a thing of the past, so why is Slaka's entry into the E.C. so hotly-contested - enthusiastically encouraged by the Deputy President of the EC and violently opposed by the British Government? The Balkan state's economic and political disarray makes E.C. entry unlikely, but perhaps only one man can perform the required economic miracle in Salaka - the nave, bungling European dogsbody Hans Dorfmann (Christop Waltz). Confounded and manipulated by all parties, he finds himself out in the cold and expelled from Slaka - but doggedly in pursuit of the state's missing fortune!
