HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY begs any number of referential mash-ups to be used as description of its outlandish tonal and stylistic qualities. It's a little like a romantic and sophisticated live-action Ninja Turtles movie imbued with a cracked version of H.P. Lovecraft's monster storytelling. It's a feature-length version of STAR WARS's Mos Eisley Cantina mixed with a scrappy, proficient passion for creature design reminiscent of Ray Harryhausen. It's also kind of director/co-writer Guillermo del Toro's HELLBOY (2004) wrapped in a blanket of his PAN'S LABYRINTH. This sequel is all these things, but none of them can accurately capture the singularity of a movie which, in some ways, stands alone in its ability to capture the crass and literary luridness of reading a comic book. It's filled with gross creatures bursting with humanity, dark poetry, and slapstick comedy; in one scene, an argument between Hellboy and Johann Krauss, a formless gas contained in a mobilized suit, escalates to the point of Tom-&-Jerry-like violence. As Hellboy himself, a heartfelt anti-hero who regularly eliminates supernatural threat as an agent for the U.S. Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense alongside girlfriend Liz (Selma Blair) and comrade Abe Sapien, Ron Perlman again embodies the role with the kind of pathos and humor that one can only expect from a horned, red-skinned Hell-spawn who loves kittens and acts like a hardboiled detective who happens to watch TV and drink a lot of canned beer. HELLBOY II's rather interesting antagonist, Prince Nuada, isn't just an evil dude. In the mold of the complex villains typically found in Hayao Miyazaki's animated fairy tales, his intentions of restoring control over Earth to an Elvish race by regaining the key to unlock the indestructible Golden Army are at least based on a legitimately noble sentiment before megalomania kicks in.

Moving toward Hellboy III
Hellboy I set the stage, taking off from the comics, and Hellboy II continues it, under the direction of Guillermo del Toro and enhanced special effects and an even better story than Hellboy I. This time out Hellboy, played to perfection by Ron Perlman, is having family problems. Life with a partner is never perfect, even for realistic comic characters. Despite the overall strangeness of the situation, viewers quickly adapt and accept that this is a world where the rules are slightly different than the one they're used to. Then it's up to the characters, the plot, and the director to make it realistic and compelling. Del Toro, Perlman, and Doug Jones and Selma Blair all add to the believability of an unbelievable situation, reflecting back to ancient mythology, yet keeping a tenuous hold ... Hellboy I set the stage, taking off from the comics, and Hellboy II continues it, under the direction of Guillermo del Toro and enhanced special effects and an even better story than Hellboy I. There is plenty of action, of course, and that plus the special effects is all that attracts a certain kind of viewer with an adolescent mind-set, but there is also plenty of character development, which is what causes the more mature, reflective viewer to return to the picture and continue to find new areas of interest. It is like the difference between the viewer who immediately turns the picture off (or leaves the theater) as soon as the credits start and has few comments other than "cool effects" and the one who wants to see who the cast and crew were, where the picture was shot, who was the director, and later what the influences were and what philosophical points can be garnered from reflecting on it. Hellboy II offers plenty for both, and should be headed toward an even better conclusion to the trilogy that will hopefully include Hellboy III.

But in the end they’ve all got to come together to fight Prince Nuada (son of the Woodland King), who, with his army of ghouls, faerie, and the like, is attempting to resurrect a golden army once controlled by his father.”

Hellboy II - Back And Better Than Ever!
I'm a HUGE fan of the comics and thought that the first movie was done just right. I think Hellboy II: the Golden Army is as good as the first movie. It takes awhile to get used to Doug Jones' voice as Abe, but once you do, you see why it's better to have the guy in the suit doing his own dialog. And Seth McFarlane does a fine job voicing Johann (although not as I had imagined him). The design work is superior to the first movie and the humor is ratcheted up a notch. The fights are better and more thrilling and the monsters are way cool. Great use of costumes and CGI working together (something Lucas should have done more of in the Star Wars prequels) to make everything feel REAL. I expect many won't like it as much as the first movie because the newness will be lost. This was in fact ... I'm a HUGE fan of the comics and thought that the first movie was done just right. I really like Hellboy II it had a great storyline to go with the original some what. All the graphics & new characters were a major bonus. Wasn't filled with a bunch of cheesy one liners " not too much " you have to have a couple of them :) I do recommend it you haven't seen it & didn't care much for the 1st one. Better then the original
It is very rare when a sequal is better than the original, but "Hellboy II" fits into that category. Lots of action, great characters, excellent story, and how can you not do well with Red and Abe singing a Barry Mannilow song together? There is foreshadowing to a third picture, and I for one can't wait for it to arrive.
