The soundtrack of a true screen gem.
Alfred Hitchcock's tale of a man mistaken for a spy and pursued by killers is a fine example of a classic suspense film. But while Gary Grant's Roger Thornhill may be suffering from a case of mistaken identity, there's no mistaking North by Northwest's composer. The score oozes Bernard Herrmann. And that's a good thing. Herrmann's music is a joy to listen to either accompanying the film or on its own, as it is here, and I've always loved his use of brassy orchestras. The inclusion of in-story musical pieces by other composers was a nice touch, as well, making this a truly complete soundtrack. The quality is so-so. There's pops and hisses here and there so it isn't the best possible recording of the score. Nevertheless, it is passable, and the sheer awesomeness of Herrmann's work makes me ... Oddly, with only a couple of exceptions nearly every track is under a minute long and ridiculously specific. This results in a whopping fifty tracks, which seems like a ton, but really isn't, due to the short length of most of the pieces. Also, each track flows seamlessly into the next, and follows from its predecessor as seamlessly. The end result is that it's not really possible to listen to most of the individual tracks by themselves; the score is clearly intended to be listened to in one go. Fine, but why separate the tracks? Herrmann titled his pieces in a nearly identical manner for his later work on Jason and the Argonauts, but the problem of lots of short tracks was solved by combining them into a (relatively) few longer pieces. They could've done this with North by Northwest but didn't, and I'm unsure why. Not that it matters. This isn't a complaint so much as an expression of bafflement. No matter how it is presented or intended to be listened to, Herrmann's work here is fantastic and mostly presented well.

Interesting soundtrack
I have been listening to this CD as I drive back-and-forth to work. It is like immersing myself in little snippets of the movie. It’s A Most Unusual Day is on the soundtrack, and I did not recall hearing it in the movie, but I am certain that it is. I won’t tell you where. If you enjoy the movie, consider giving this soundtrack a listen.

One of my favorite Hitchcock Scores!
Although "Vertigo" (1958) is my all time favorite, the "North By Northwest" soundtrack provides the listener with every music track from the film. I was amazed that even some of the unused tracks made this album as well. If you enjoyed watching the film, listen to this album and re-live the action, romance and intrigue of the film through its music while driving down the road or relaxing in your private place without having to watch what is going on in the movie at the time! Fans will enjoy it immensely. My only complaint is that many of the tracks were cut in places that someone wanting to select specific queues might not fancy. Sometimes a track will start at the end of the previous selection, but not a deal-breaker.
