Truth or Dare DVD Very Disappointing
Having moved my VHS collection to DVD a little more than a year ago I was missing one of my favorite movies.... Madonna's Truth or Dare. I recently bought a copy and with eager anticipation I waited 2 weeks for it to arrive in the mail. What a disappointment it was. After popping it into the player I found the sound quality to be poor. In many areas of the documentary you have to turn up the volume in order to hear the conversations, but when the music comes on you rush to the volume control because the music sections are recorded much louder. I found I was hanging onto the remote for the entire movie constantly changing the volume up and down. And picture quality... well, the musical color clips were great, but the black and white documentary portion was very grainy. It was fine ... Madonna! Is it the Truth or a Dare?
I feel badly for the people that didn't get their movie for whatever the reason. However, I definitely want to respond to the reviews by the good people at CNET. This movie is precisely a filmed account of the enigma that is Madonna. I had the good fortune to see the Blond Ambition tour when it came to Houston and (only) after a concert by Bruce Springsteen, it was the best concert I have ever been to. And I have been to many including icons like Michael Jackson, Fleetwood Mac and Journey. The issue of black and white mixed with snippets of color in the movie says one thing: Raw, unadulterated, the real thing, in your face, and on and on. Yes, Madonna will never earn a place in anyone's heart for being loveable and kind but that is precisely what the movie is intended to illustrate to ... She is controlling, moody, hostile, and angry. Yet, she remains true to only one person- herself. She is also definitely a perfectionist, driven, uncompromising and completely dedicated to being the best. Who else would challenge the police in a country that wasn't even her own. However, what appeared so interesting, was that she rarely talked down to anyone, treated people with respect and showed a soft side that I didn't expect to see. She herself has admitted on more than one occasion, that she is not even close to being the best dancer or singer. For someone that isn't the best at anything, I saw her put on an incredible show, both in the movie and in person. It's nice seeing someone that has made a few hundred million dollars RAW and with her hair up in a towel! I thought the movie achieved all its objectives and was extremely entertaining from start to finish. I was actually a bit sad that it ended. I would recommend it to anyone, as long as they see it with an open mind and understand that she is even pushing your buttons in the movie. You both love her and hate her at times in the same 2 hours of the movie. And that is a rare accomplishment.
