The greatest Weird Al collection of its time!
"Weird Al" Yankovic's "Permanent Record" box set is a rarity for a number of reasons. First, the print run was limited and subsequent printings never happened because the original artwork went missing (Al thought that a scan might look too cheap). Second, "Permanent Record" is a rarity because Weird Al is simply the best at what he does. There will never be another like the man himself, so it would only stand to reason that there will never be another collection quite like this. "Permanent Record" is in many ways a greatest hits collection, and for sure, Yankovic's pre "Bad Hair Day" hits are represented well here. But "Permanent Record" also touches on many of the less publicized songs of his, as many of Al's original compositions make to this collection as well. This box set would ... "Weird Al" Yankovic's "Permanent Record" box set is a rarity for a number of reasons. Second, "Permanent Record" is a rarity because Weird Al is simply the best at what he does. But "Permanent Record" also touches on many of the less publicized songs of his, as many of Al's original compositions make to this collection as well. This box set would be a perfect primer to introduce non-believers to Weird Al's amazing career, but due to its aformentioned scarcity, it has since become a collector's item and another box to check off on a completist's list. The set contains 50 songs, all of which but one you can find on Yankovic's more-readily-available albums. The Placebo E.P. version of "Happy Birthday" is a worthwhile alternate take and truly a different version. "UHF" is the single version (not the abbreviated version included on "Greatest Hits Volume 2") that also appeared on the album "UHF: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (And Other Stuff)," and "My Bologna" is labeled incorrectly: the version available in this box set is unfortunately the regular version available on a few of Al's other albums (it premiered on his self-titled album). The Capitol Records single version - recorded in a bathroom - is sadly not included in this set. This was, as far as I know, the record label's fault. The songs represent a nice compilation of "Weird Al" Yankovic's journey through popular music from his debut album until "Alapalooza," with the addition of "Headline News," a parody he recorded specifically for this set (but can also be found on the album "Greatest Hits Volume 2"). The special insert booklet might be the most interesting and best reason to buy "Permanent Record." Filled with previously unseen photos and comments from both Al as well as mentor Dr. Demento, this thick booklet gives us the closer look at Al that many have wanted. Al also comments on his scores of songs, giving us a little bit of insight behind them. The availability of this box set unfortunately puts it out of reach for most purveyors of music, but as a collector's item, it's well worth buying if you have some extra change lying around that you don't know what to do with. If you are a hardcore Weird Al fan, then this set is for you. As Al would say, it just might give meaning to your boring, miserable life!

Great CD set, a lot of older material
I’ve been a fan of Al's since I heard "Another One Rides the Bus" This 4 disc set I believe is better than "Essential Weird Al". A lot more older material/songs on this. Any true Al fan will have this set. A personal favorite from his 1989 film "UHF" "Gandhi II" is not on here but….. Two of my favorites "Yoda" & "Jurassic Park" are here. Too old to have my other "The Saga Begins". Yes, I have been a "Star Wars" fan & collector for over 30 years now. Do not pass this up if you are a fan of Al’s. awesome set!
I bought this cd set because it had so many songs on it, all from different albums, in one set. The cds came in a box set, with a book about all the songs included. All of my favorite songs were included in this box set, so it also took away the need to purchase every cd separately. I would recommend this box set to anyone who is a Weird Al fan!
