I bought this dvd because I thought it would give an interesting insight of a czech pilot flying for the RAF during world war 2.In the end,it sent me to sleep after a while. Why,do you ask? because- a, film was slow in story and action from start to finish. b,actors who moved and acted like strangers who have met for the first time. and c,it looked like the fight scenes were done with toy planes not the real mcoy! All in all, nothing positive to say about the film really. How does it compare with others? right at the bottom. sorry!
This film is very well woven together, it sets the scene on the eve of WWII in Czechoslovakia on an young but obedient local squadron of trainee pilots. After the Czech capitualtion to the invading German Forces our 2 heros (Karel and his trainer Franta) escape to England to join the RAF. Who both experience increasing frustration at being grounded whilst learning the RAF/English language (essential for radio) and practicing on bikes. The toll on the RAF continues finally they get their opportunity to join in. Their confidences grows until Karel is shot down over England and limps into a house where he meets Susan, whose Husband is posted in the Navy but listed as missing, Susan is looking after 6 children evacuated from London. After a night of passion Karel returns to base to rejoin up with his fellow countrymen who 24 hours earlier thought he was dead. Franta his Squadron Leader is then asked to meet Susan in hilarious scenes where she believes Karel has been back to base and bragging... The love triangle at the heart of the story causes great pain culminating in Karel finding out during a flyby! Meanwhile the story jumps back (Back to Czech Pre War and forward to a 1950 Soviet Labor camp where Franta has been held since the end of the war (1945) as the Soviet thought process was that as Czech's they had escaped once before to fight for freedom and they might do it again. In prison Franta meets a former SS Doctor and the story continues with the retelling of the love triangle and how even in the face of death both pilots risked their lives to rescue each other. There are so many twists I wont spoil it for you. The aeriel combact footage adds to the drama, The DVD I bought on ebay has a combination of German, English and Czech Audio but does come with English subtitles. I really enjoyed the film very much.Read full review
