This will be my second time owning this system. Originally bought one when they first came out and am now getting the system again. This is a handy multi media device as you have a wide variety of games to choose from along with a wide variety of movies to chose from as well. Large screen for a hand held device makes it easy to enjoy your gaming and movie watching. Add the fact that you can add a memory stick to the device and include your favorite multi media pictures, music and videos and more on the memory stick and you will have a device that will be able to keep gamers, movie watchers and kids entertained. Of course it is a hand held so there is the consern of the stability of the housing and screen. I've dropped my last one before without having any issues with it but I do know people with small kids that have had theirs destroyed by the little ones. Personally my 2 and 3 year olds enjoy being able to watch their favorite shows on the go so I haven't had any problems with miss treatment to the new device. For the 1001 model that I currently have, the one problem that I had with it was that the device would not connect to my WPA2 wireless connection as it only supports WEP and WPA connections. Not too big of a problem if you know how to setup your wireless from scratch, but can be an issue if you don't know what your doing with your wireless connections. We have a Nintendo DS (restricted to games and music) and Leapstar 2 (Kids educational games) systems as well and for me I am partial to the PSP as I can combine everything I want into the one system. I think I will be buying the newer systems next and pass around the systems as needed to the house hold on our trips.Read full review
The PSP is amazing. You can connect wireless to the internet, use it as a podcast, read books, watch videos, download videos, listen to music, listen to online radio stations, watch pictures. Do all these things from the device's screen or connect it to your TV with an accessory cable. It has the largest screen and resolution of any portable video game today. Games can be played from the little disks (UMD) or from the memory stick (if you modify the built in firmware) One can run freeware software called hombrew making the device anything the software does. It can act as a graphic scientific calculator, universal remote control, PDA application-like, etc. You can even make on-line phone calls using SKYPE software and an accessory microphone. The internet is full of information to multiply the potential of this device. Accessories include GPS with maps, Video camera, Touch Screen, etc. If you want to just play games this device has the most powerful CPU, best audio and did I mention the screen's resolution? Games can contain up to 1.8 GB of data! compared with 256 MB of Nintendo DS (low CPU power, low screen resolution, low quality audio). On the negative side. It's not a toy, don't drop it, don't apply pressure to the screen, don't seat on it, don't leave it under the sun or in the bathroom while someone showers. The screen will get scratched eventually. Variety of available games is not as big as Nintendo DS and game choices are more for adults than little children. Having said all these facts. My four year old daughter plays all the time and loves it. does not know how to read but figured out how to use all the basic features: games, movies, pictures, music. I don't let her take it to the daycare or outside the car or house. I bought my unit used from EBAY and we are glad of our choice.Read full review
The SONY PSP (PlayStation Portable). One of gaming's revolutionary devices. I have had the PSP 1001 for over 4 years and I can tell you that it is a excellent product. From Racing games, to shooters like Socom U.S. Navy Seals the psp 1001 handles like a F-16 fighter. Not only you can play games but you can also listen to music, Skype a friend, surf the net, read a comic or book, and even watch full movies/videos! The thing is tough! I have had it for 4 years and this was the year it broke, most carpet floors and gravel or grass wont break this thing i even dropped it on wood floor from 6 feet. The killers are Concrete, vehicles, angry throwing, and high heals things that you fall on and hurt you will hurt your PSP. If scratches ant a problem then you have chosen the right product small very light scratches will not bother your gaming experience. The thick screen can handle most scrapes with out and interruption. You will run into problems with C.V.At.Hh.Tthy. (Concrete, Vehicles, Angry throwing, and High heals Things that hurt you) That is when you will find yourself with a broken PSP or part of the PSP broken. Great things about the psp, +Its loud! The speakers preform great and wont blow out on you. Sound Quality with Headsets or headphones is excellent even, at moments, better then the ipod. +Video quality for the size of the screen is good, some motion blur but it happens more when watching cheep psp movies. +Controls, Awkward but genius! Considering the size and the amount of buttons convertibility is a sacrifice that you can handle for better gaming experience. +Games, are great I was made a psp and socom fan with this first device. +WiFi, Very powerful, not as powerful as maybe your laptop but better then your Xbox's WiFi adapter. Speed is better then you phone when surfing and as fast as a sat internet connection when using Dial up. Which is great cause the psp does NOT need high speed to play games online i have been using a dial up connection for all 4 years at 54 kbps and still i get no lag when playing socom. +You cant get viruses on your psp which is good if you like to "hack" your psp. Bad things, -Not indestructible, mine died when I dropped it from 5 feet onto a concrete floor. -Outdated, Sony has stopped making most of the 1001 extras and 2000 extras like the headset wont work with the 1001. And Sony has stopped making software updates for the 1001. -Surfing fast but unorganized, its kind of hard to navigate the internet especially when using Bing. -No YouTube, Just doesn't work. -Price, A little high even new psp 1001 are 120 brand new. But it is worth it. Overall, The psp 1001 was the best handheld I have ever had. RIP my psp you served me well. R.I.P. PP2*095*900-PSP1001 2007-2011 "PRO"-Gamer -Killertank27Read full review
After roughly a decade at the top of the home console industry, Sony decided to tackle the portable system market--one heavily fortified by Nintendo's Game Boy Advance and DS. Sony sought to take down Nintendo by adopting the tactic that made the PlayStation 2 such a runaway success: by offering sophisticated, graphically intensive games and a heavy dose of multimedia functionality. The device is called the PlayStation Portable (PSP), and in addition to playing games of PS2 graphical quality, it can play music and movies (downloaded or via disc) and surf the Web. It may not be the best handheld media product on the market, and the games lack the innovation of ones on Nintendo's portables, but as an all-in-one device, the Sony PSP is king of the hill. From an aesthetic perspective, the Sony PSP is a gorgeous device. It's one of those gadgets you immediately want to get your hands on but vigilantly want to protect once you set it down. Weighing essentially the same as the Nintendo DS (6.2 ounces, including removable battery) and measuring 6.7 by 2.9 by 0.9 inches (WHD), the body feels well built and solid in your hand. Although not a lightweight, it's by no means a brick, nor, we suspect, would it be especially durable in a fall; you'll want to treat the PSP just as gingerly as an iPod or a Palm-style PDA. The centerpiece of the handheld is its especially impressive 4.3-inch wide-screen display (480x272 pixels, 16.77 million colors). The screen is flanked by controls that will be immediately recognizable to fans of past PlayStations: the directional keypad is to the left of the screen, and the familiar square, triangle, circle, and X buttons are to the right. We dug how Sony managed to include an analog "joystick" below the directional keypad. The stick isn't raised like the analog controls on a PS2 or an Xbox, but it conveys that multidirectional element that gives it a joysticklike feel. In lieu of the PS2 controller's four total shoulder buttons, the PSP has two: one per shoulder. Ergonomically, the device is OK but not great; as with most handheld gaming devices, you'll have to do a little finger stretching every 15 minutes or so to keep from cramping up. The PSP uses Sony's recently created "cross media bar" interface. You use the directional keypad to horizontally navigate through Settings, Photo, Music, Video, Game, and Internet icons, and each section has other icons attached to it on a vertical axis. All in all, it's a simple and elegant way to access the PSP's many features. Games and officially licensed movies come on Sony's proprietary UMD (Universal Media Disc) media, which are housed in protective cartridges. The UMD drive is grafted to the back of the unit; you load it and snap it shut just as you would a camcorder. The top edge also sports infrared and a USB 2.0 port that you can use to link the device to your PC or Mac, though no USB connection cable is included. The good: The Sony PSP is a slick portable gaming system highlighted by an impressive wide-screen display and PS2-like graphics. It also boasts built-in Wi-Fi, a Web browser, and the ability to play music and videos, as well as to store images. The bad: The Sony PSP's multimedia functionality is underwhelming, especially for video, requiring expensive memory cards. The load times on the UMD games can be excessive. The bottom line: The Sony PSP elevates portable gaming to the next level, but its multimedia functionality falls short of its full potential.Read full review
From the time I started playing the system, I was attached to it up to until I was able to know more about it...Little by litte, my relatives & friends have been influenced of what I have told them and have asked favor to also buy them one, preferably used & so I did... The best about it are: 1) its economical, cost less than any laptop, 2) very light and handy, 3) easy & very friendly to use because only a few keys to remember that a regular laptop, and 4) memory wise, Sony probably is doing some modifications so it can still be used in the market as probably, it will beat other computer companies. Right now, I am settled with PSP: gamewise, computer access, text messaging, music & other stuffs...it has eveything... Hope others will like & try to learn more of the PSP...Read full review
The battery life on the slim is much improved from the fatty model. It lasts a good 2-3 times longer by my experience. Also the position of the wlan switch is nice, as well as the speaker's new home. Other than that it's a PSP if you have friends and hang out with them a lot, grab some games and play. Being able to sync it with my PS3 and play off my TV is a cool feature too. All in all you just need to do your homework and figure out if a PSP is right for you. It has more hardcore games (like monster hunter) than the DS so if your looking to just pass some time and relax you might consider the DS instead, rather than raging over the fact that you don't play your PSP enough because you can't beat the games (or the fact that there are very few really solidly good games).
Here's a product I got as a christmas present for someone else, and kept it for myself, then had to buy another. First thing is that this system is catered to all ages, even my 60 year old mother plays bejeweled on it. Battery limit is about 5 hours without connection to a charger. They made every feature under the sun for it including AV cables for tv hookup, usb cables for ps3 hookup, basic internet, one of the largest array of games of any console or handheld systems currently out. The controls are easy to digest, and if you wanted to watch a movie you could, (personally i would never want to watch a movie on a screen so small) but it is an option for you nonetheless. Now that they have so many kind of models out there, finding an affordable psp is possible, 1001's have a great track record. I have heard some complaints about the newer models, but that just seems like the same kind of issue new phones get when they come out. Older models are always the best. The screen is sensitive. The only real setback with this system. A screen protector is a must for these portable units, your t-shirt could scratch the surface. Literally.Read full review
I bought this for one of my nephews for Christmas. Of course, I wanted to "test it out" first, you know, just to make sure it all worked and whatnot....and I ended up being completely addicted to it for about two weeks straight. I hated to have to give it up! As a 40 year old woman, I thought to myself, "ah, well, it was fun while it lasted. I'm a grown woman. I can't be running around with a PSP! They're for kids!" But then I said you know what? You only live once, and darnit, if I want a PSP of my own, then by god I will get myself a PSP of my own. I can't compare this to other handheld gaming systems, as I have never played any other handheld gaming systems, but I found the graphics to be phenomenal, the controls were easy to use, the volume was nice and loud, and the game selection was outstanding. Great device, for any age!Read full review
I REALLY love this DEVICE and found it appropriate to say that this device did have like 10 problems at launch date. CONS: I will get rid of the cons first because I find that they are the most tedious in this situation. People want to know what problems this may have, so I will just get them out of the way Bulky: This PSP device (101K) is TOTALLY bulky. This was dubbed PSP brick, or BRICK HANDHELD, it was best dubbed that, and it fits. WEB USAGE: This was later corrected by an SW update, but it seemed any website with an SD card, and with file cache all that off, and on, etc. It would say web memory filled. I find though that this glitch has been fixed, and hasn't been a bother to many because it still functions, and it's a gaming device, you aren't using a gaming device for the web. Pros: This is also the most needed thing too, because people want to know WHY THEY SHOULD GET THE DEVICE. Pros: The screen: I was like WOWOOWOOOWOWOWO, because it's so big, can be used for video usages, gaming, UMD VIDEOS, UMD MUSIC, sD card viewing. I used it for all of that, and never had a complaint. My uncle has had crashes in the SD video viewer, and sometimes UMD's load incorrectly, but he's mostly became an XBOX360 freak for the most part :) The toggle things: Dang it I know what they are called, just cant think of it LOL, I am playing games tons on it, and I always find this to be responsive. 3.5 MM headset jack: YAY, if I'm somewhere I cant have loud games, and I want to have them, just put in a very easy to find set of headphones, and you are set! If you have any complaints with any of this, it is a very easy to use device. So if any issues found, just mess around with it, or contact SONY, I no longer own a PSP so I can't answer questions But overall, really responsive and I love this gaming device.Read full review
I bought this to replace my old one (it was old and worn out) but the years with my old one was great. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a handheld system. It has much more to offer then the Nintendo DS, such as music, video, and game storage. It also has a built-in internet browser that allows you to surf the web VIA Wifi. The PSP also has better graffics then the DS. The PSP's graffics are similar to the PS2's graffics, while the DS graffics looks like a old N64. The PSP also uses better technology for the games. The PSP's games are actual discs in a case that keeps the disc safe a...Read full reviewnd allows it to be easily read by the PSP (this cuts down on damaged discs, which can be a problem), while the DS is still useing the old-school cartridge system (you would think that they would move to better technology by now....)
