About this product

Product Information

John Carpenter's low-budget debut feature is a hilarious romp set in the deepest reaches of outer space. The haggard crew of the dilapidated Dark Star spaceship--Doolittle (Brian Narelle), Boiler (Cal Kuniholm), Pinback (Dan O'Bannon), and Talby (Dre Pahich)--is on an extended mission to seek out and destroy unstable planets. But after 20 years of the same routine, each crewmember is reaching the end of his tether. The journey is fraught with mishaps, and danger seems to lurk around every corner. There are misbehaving pet aliens, suicidal bombs that dream of detonating, frozen crewmates dispensing advice from beyond the grave, and a surly, unhelpful main computer that holds the men it serves in total contempt. Despite all these problems, the crew is still bored to the brink of madness. Co-written by the multitasking O'Bannon, who is also credited as the film's production designer and editor, DARK STAR brims with giddy jabs at the science-fiction genre (including George Lucas's THX 1138), an approach that Mel Brooks would later take in his own sci-fi spoof, SPACEBALLS (1987). In addition to writing, directing, and acting, Carpenter also composed the film's atmospheric score.

This is an outstanding seller to deal with. Fair prices that are more than reasonable in this economy. The product is even better condition than described, a true value for my money. Packaged and shipped well shows seller has concern for the products he sells to arrive in excellent condition. The seller is friendly and communicates timely with his customers. All in all I highly recommend this seller and would do business again anytime. Thank you and be safe. Good luck to the future.

Sci-fi comedy that made me laugh out loud.

Dark Star is basically a low budget student film but it's still excellent sci-fi on a shoestring budget. It's also funny as hell especially the suicidal AI smart bomb and the beach ball alien scenes.

  • AS FUNNY AS I REMEMBERED!!!!!!

A LONG time ago I remembered seeing this movie on the television. I've been searching for it for years and I couldn't remember the name of it. Thank goodness for eBay. I asked a movie Seller here about it and I was given a couple of names and one of them rang a bell, DARK STAR. This is a fantastic student project by John Carpenter and Dan O'Bannon. It's a predecessor to HALLOWEEN and ALIEN. The music composition is vaguely familiar, but the plot of the movie is very humorous and hilarious and a tad optomistic, but sad at the same time. There are quite a few scenes that mimick ALIEN as well. Low budget special effects include muffin tins, tiny brooms, beach ball aliens, lots and lots of knobs, buttons, lights going on and off, hoses, airduct suits, etc. It's a must have for any ...

  • Great direction makes it work

This is one cool flick, not gonna get acting awards, but you won't forget it. Early John Carpenter as Dir. Special effects are hard to describe, some innovative and some so simple that it'll make you cry. All of it is imaginative and fun and a little scary.

  • "Good Carpenter First!"

John Carpenter's 1974 sci-fi comedy features a group of space explorers dealing with mishaps while on a mission to rid unstable planets. Carpenter's first film is good and this dvd has decent picture and sound plus 2 cuts of the film and the trailer. I recommend this.

  • If you liked ALIEN, this is the humorous progenitor.

The film is rather mediocre on the whole, but is quite humorous to the thinker. This film is a must for fans of John Carpenter pictures or Ridley Scott's ALIEN.
