Spooks Series 7
To my mind Spooks is the best British TV series going at present. I find all of the series wholly gripping. I think this is because the cast are so strong, the direction dynamic, but most of all because of the quality of the writing is so high. The dialogue is economical, taught, & witty and the plots, whilst occasionally stretching plausibility, are generally highly topical. They will also present the central characters (and us) with moral dilemmas: The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the individual/when is killing execution, when is it murder? They are also highly skilled at cliff hangers, and dragging characters back from the brink: Ros Myers appears to be dead and buried, but not so. You can also spend several episodes thinking Zaf will eventually turn up only to be ... To my mind Spooks is the best British TV series going at present. I find all of the series wholly gripping. You can also spend several episodes thinking Zaf will eventually turn up only to be disappointed and thwarted to learn he was always dead. This is a very clever theatrical device to engage us, the viewer with hope. Hope and goodness play as bigger role as expediency and termination. In this series (7) we see the brutal demise of the beautiful Adam Carter. Brutal because to loose such another central, complex and appealing lynch pin to the plot is hard for us the viewer. Ros comes back from the dead and is alive and fleeing in Moscow, and in this series Harry gets set up as a double agent by Connie, who in the process summarily bumps off Ben. Whoever the producers of this show are they are ruthless both to us the viewer and the actors. Cut Adam! Cut Ben! Cut Connie! They're all out. Get over it! And on with the next series. Uncomfortable but totally compelling viewing. Must get series 8 I M Feb 10
