I've tried several MP3 recorders and the Edirol is the best. Even the entry-level model has the best built-in mic I've ever heard. I insisted the office get a model with a line-in 1/8" mic jack but it was unnecessary. Our $300 mic isn't any better than the built-in one you get for less than that. UI: it's simple enough to use, but I often hand equipment (like the Flip Video Camera) to people who don't speak english and have never used anything as complicated as a door nob. Here, you can get some of them to use the edirol with coaching, but one smart user was at a loss when the hidden buttons on the back got switched from low to hi sensitivity on the mic. So it is too feature heavy for novices, and the search for a truly simple "hit play and stop" recorder continues. But if you want to record field interviews in the Sahara and turn around and get a drum circle, this one will do both better than any other. I own 3 mics designed for each situation - but the Edirol does all three with a crazy-good amplifier. I usually have the input set at 25% sensitivity on the high-sens setting for conversations. Works even in buses and streets at 12%.Read full review
I have a recording studio at my home with multitrack recorders and such This recorder can be plugged into the mixing board or record a live performance with its top quality built in microphones,,as well as a on the fly recording of jam sections in any local ,,its smaller than it looks and the sound quality is incredible You wont be disappointed with this unit and the price has been dropped 70 dollars from edirol so you can purchase it for even less on e-bay it will handle a 32 gig hd-sd (high Density Scan Disk) card witch I strongly recommend you purchase separately. and it comes with a USB cable to transfer your music to your computer an ac adaptor and a very useful remote control I am Very happy with my purchase and I know you will be as well
I have been using an R-09 to record interviews and speeches for 2 years and needed my own, rather than borrowing from my employer. Nothing this small picks up sound better and having a removable SD card to hold audio files makes it easy to email and save audio. Battery life is great, but I record phone interviews through the mic jack and use it plugged in a lot. I think it's very hard to delete your audio by accident. I've never done that before. Can't say enough great things about it.
The recorder does work, but the controls for Hold, Limiter, Low cut, and Mic gain are inoperative. They are stuck and will not toggle on or off, and I don't know in what position they really are in. Otherwise I need to work around these limitations. I can take it apart and fix it, but the plastic around the tiny screws is cracked so I hesitate to dismantle it lest I damage it more.

I recently purchased the Edirol R-09 reorder for recording sounds to embed in still photos, it is a great recorder, and I do like how it looks too. It works nicely for me. Sure, I would buy it again.
