The info. included with this unit is essentially useless, so be prepared to view YouTube videos and experiment with your first set of batteries to figure out it's many functions. The joy stick response is a little sluggish, but once you get used to this unit having to think about the commands you give it, you'll find it works pretty well vs. it's intended use. A plus is the ease of increasing accuracy of a waypoint location through repeated sampling of that location. Overall satisfied and almost over my considerable frustration while trying to figure this thing out (MUCH more difficult than other Garmin gps units I've owned and currently own).

I had an earlier model that I used with ease; no problems at all. This newer model is difficult to use, even with online instructions. I haven't used it in the field yet, and I am starting to think that I will just have to take the loss and buy a different model or brand. It, as far as I can tell, gives a compass bearing only on the compass, and it is not accurate (my older Garmin gave an accurate bearing that I could use with my compass).

No, seriously, Garmin Etrex 10 is an remarkable GPS device! Just look: a new high-sensitivity receiver with GLONASS support, low-power but high-performance processor, efficient sealing rubber - and all this features at a price comparable to noname car devixes! But an epic fail of Garmin Etrex 10 is a few storage capacity. It seems unclear: today, when a flash memory costs even a dime, why the manufacturer have installed only 8MB of internal memory or simply have not provided a slot for SD card? It is obviously: with greater storage capacity Garmin Etrex 10 would satisfy the requirements of the 99% of users and beat all other "advanced" (and more expensive!) devices. It is no wonder that the manufacturer, widely advertising useless basemap, insolently states that custom maps could not be downloaded in Garmin Etrex 10! Nevertheless, loading topo map in a vector IMG format to Garmin Etrex 10 is not easy, but very easy! Simply connect your GPS device to your computer in а "Mass Storage" USB Mode and just replace the file of the base map gmapbmap.img by a topo map file with the same name. Only what we shall download? Detailed topo maps of a whole state have a size of tens of megabytes! However, for most users - fishermen, backpackers and geocachers the whole area is not immediately needed. On my site http://etrex10.ru/en/ you will find a set of topo maps and graphical interface for downloading into your device. Maps are good detailed and their elements are optimized for the monochrome display of Garmin Etrex 10. And all this maps are free. Pros: Good value, lightweight, 25-hour battery life, reliable push buttons, bright display. Cons: Small screen, no color, no electronic compass, buttons are harder to push than 62 series, less accurate than Oregon and 62 seriesRead full review
I bought this to replace the original ETREX that served me well until the screen became hard to read. The ETREX 10 appealed to me because it can use not only the GPS satellites, but also the Russian GLONASS satellites. I find that I have 19 to 24 satellites being tracked where with just GPS I was lucky to get 10. I get a lock much faster now and works great even in canyons and under tree cover. This gps has a mini USB connector making it easier to connect to a computer. This ETREX is always in my back pack along with a compass and paper map of the area I plan to hike. I carry a gps camera phone but usually find my ETREX hanging from my neck at the end of the day. Handy little tool!
This is a good simple gps for anyone who doesn't need all the bells and whistles. The biggest downside was the directions that came with it were not very good, especially if you are not real handy with electronics. However if you take the time to go online there are some great videos that explain the features really well. My husband recently used it on a hunting trip and was very glad he had it, especially after having issues with his compass.
