"Ewoks - The Battle for Endor" is a fantastic family orientated fantasy film. It returns the human cast, albeit briefly in most cases, from the earlier "Ewok Adventure" film, "Caravan of Courage." It is this aspect of the story that separates this film from most other family entertainments, though. Its themes are closer to "Bambi," "Swiss Family Robinson," and "Little House on the Prairie" than, say, the original "Star Wars" trilogy but it is just as exciting on many levels. It has an epic feel to it, even though its budget was a mere fraction of the "Star Wars" films. Even so, this second "Ewok Adventure" is visually striking and entertaining. There are some new characters, both good and evil, as well as some extraordinary creatures including a dragon-like beast. They certainly add to the sense that the Forest Moon of Endor is a real world. In fact, much of the terrain is familiar to anyone who saw "Return of the Jedi" and, yet, many new localities are also seen for the first time. There is more action in this "Ewok Adventure" than in "Caravan of Courage," as the first story was basically a heroic quest, while this story centres around the evil mauraders and witch who are obsessed with obtaining a powerful crystal from a starcruiser. Sadly, many lives are lost including that of Eric Walker's character, Mace Towani, and other lives are changed forever due to the ignorance and brutality of the giant mauraders, as lead by King Terak and his witch advisor, Charal (Sian Phillips). Fortunately, Wicket the Ewok (portrayed for the third and final time by the brilliant Warwick Davis) is back in top form and he, along with Teek, a super-fast being of unknown origin, help the young orphaned Cindel Towani escape and survive the battles that ensue. Cindel is portrayed by a very capable five year old actress, Aubree Miller, and she proves to be both a charming and memorable heroine. She is not unlike Shirley Temple, and this is probably no coincidence, as George Lucas basically made these Ewok adventures for his then young adopted daughter, Amanda, who loved the Ewoks. There is much to enjoy about this film, including the chance to see Wilford Brimley in a role reminiscent of the Grandfather character in Heidi. Like all Lucasfilm productions, the production values are uniformly excellent. The visual and sound effects are superior to anything else seen on television in the '80s or earlier, and I understand that they earned an Emmy Award. Joe Johnson concluded his amazing work relating to the primordial look and feel of Endor and the Ewok civilisation. Highly recommended viewing for anyone who likes the Ewoks, enjoys the "Star Wars" universe, and is a kid (or a kid at heart). 101munyipsRead full review
