About this product

Product Information

Dashing Gregory Peck stars as General Frank Savage, commander of the 8th Air Force during World War II. Loosely based on the true story of Major General Frank A. Armstrong, TWELVE O'CLOCK HIGH begins with Savage appearing to be a fearless fighter with almost no compassion for his men. Told in flashback from the perspective of Major Harvey Stovall (Dean Jagger), the story unfolds as Savage takes over Stovall's Bomb Group in 1942. The company has suffered numerous losses, morale is at an all-time low, and the tired pilots and their crews are immediately antagonized by Savage's obsession with discipline, leaving Savage and Stovall with the onerous task of rebuilding the pride of a fighting force that despises its leader. Jagger received an Oscar for his efforts, but the real star is Peck, exhibiting a vast repertoire to portray a complicated character. Using actual combat footage from both American and German cameras, director Henry King creates an environment in which bravery and heroism count but war itself is anything but romantic.

    A Classic

A Classic WW2 movie. The characters and story could step right out of real life. Lots of original footage and equipment make you get absorbed into the movie. A real gem for my war collection.

  • Twelve O'Clock High

A great WW II classic, wonderfully acted by Gregory Peck and Dean Jaeger. For a '40s movie, real combat footage used. The B&W images are excellent, photography crisp and clean; no pops, lines or scratches. A really high quality DVD. A good reminder of the important role the Air Force played in winning the war; the sacrifices made, the lives lost. In all some 50% of B-17 crews never made it back home. This was up for an academy award and I can see why. A fitting tribute and a compelling story. A great movie to add to anyone's collection,

  • Twelve O'Clock High (DVD, 2001)

General Frank Savage (Gregory Peck) is commander of the 8th Air Force and is forced to take personal command of operations when things start to snowball out of control. Call it hard luck, or poor dicipline, this group is demoralized and losses are growing. Savage wades into the group and in an unsympathetic manner shocks the group into compliance. Everybody wants to transfer out, but he does whatever he can do to stall them. In making the group successful, he too falls into that old trap of too closely sympathizing with his men. He has started doing exactly that which he criticized his predecessor of doing. Eventually, he too has a breakdown. This is a good old movie and worth watching.

  • Outstanding Film

This is an outstanding movie, particularly if you are looking to learn something substantial, rather than just viewing it for entertainment value. This is one of the FEW war movies actually endorsed by the military community as authentic and is also use as teaching material in military command schools. Its problem analysis and leadership examples are top rate and the acting is supurb, particularly when you consider that this film was made in 1949, just four years after the end of the war. If you are a fan of military films, authenticity, history, or just a fan of Gregory Peck, this film is a definite 5-star must have.

  • Twelve OCLOCK HIGH Is very real to life.

It's a great movie that I have wanted to buy for years. I enjoy the leading actors very much. I Recomend it very much to anyone who enjoys military movies
