Goodbye Lenin is one of those fantastic films that tells a political story but with humor and realism. This isn't a story about a person at the top, or a person suffering at the bottom, this is about how ordinary everyday people were affected by an amazingly fast political change. However political the film is, the reason it works so well is because it balances the politics with almost slapstick humor. The visual style is simple, reflecting the telling of a story documenting normal people. Daniel Bruhl who plays Alex really is the heart of the film. His comic timing is contrasted nicely with his sympathetic portrayal of an awkward young man who is not just looking after his mother, but looking after what East Germany used to stand for too. I would definitely recommend that you see this film. At the time the Berlin Wall came down I really didn't appreciate the dramatic change that occured in German society as a result. This film will provoke, entertain and inform. It will provide far more of a window into history than any stuffy documentary ever will as it shows the lives of the people it affected.Read full review
Enjoyable movie about family devotion. The story is about a close knit family--a single mother and her two children in East Berlin. The time is 1989. The mother is a devoted Socialist who has raised her children after her husband has deserted the family for a life outside Communism. The mother witnesses a protest and sees her son among the demonstrators. She has a heart attack and is in a coma for eight months. During the eight months, the Berlin Wall has fallen and life has completely changed for residents inside the former Iron Curtain. When she awakens, the doctors warn the family not to stress her already delicate condition. The family, especially the son, strains to duplicate life as the mother knew it before she had her heart attack. The effort leads to many comical as well as tender and touching moments. Worthwhile watching. Very sharp wit as well as a good understanding of human nature.Read full review

an absolute must see!!! very touching film, one of my favorite foreign films, shows the love one has in family. how willing someone will go to keep there mother happy, and alive!
I loved this sweet movie. The humor was great. I always expect a little more of either swearing or nudity in European films, but this was a thing of beauty anyway. I was sorry that a little rain had to fall with the ending-I don't want to give it away. Sometimes I like things to have happy endings, but it mostly was.
Such a great movie that every german film enthusiast must see. The story itself is both sad and heartwarming at the same time with one of the most beautiful endings i have ever seen in a film.
The movie gives great insight of how drastically the lives of people in the GDR radically changed when the Berlin Wall fell. With lots of humor and sensitiveness, the actors and actresses are able to capture this historic event in Germany. Great performance by Daniel Brühl.
I highly recommend this film. Its a refreshing change of pace from the hollywood special effects world. Just a great story told by great actors. Don't miss it.
Great comedy about the integration of East/west berlin! Good acting and witty humor. I personally am interested in German history especially berlin so I really liked the movie.
