All buyers of "out of date" ink might want to visit the HP site to learn about the definition of the install-by date printed on boxes. Some cartridges also have date codes printed on the plastic housing. Having explored this issue years ago some "experts" claim unopened inkjet units are (should be) good for 2 to 4 years beyond the date. Of course that will depend on storage conditions since a hot environment will probably shorten lifespan. If the price is right an "expired" unit may be worth the risk, since $5 to $10 is significantly less than retail for a new unit. I've owned a printer that requires HP15 HP17 for over ten years and they are the easiest unit to refill on the market for a variety of reasons. The HP 15 is virtually a fail proof refill process for anyone with average handyman skills. Just pop out the plug, refill, and replug with a stopped that comes in most kits. Equally relevant is the older designs seem to have much more reliable electronics. I've refilled an HP15 4 or 5 times (with massive quantities of ink) before noticing any deterioration of print quality. Unlike the newer, smaller teaspoon quantity cartridges the older cartridges have larger capacity and the HP15 doesn't have foam or sponge to deterioriate or create foam when ink is injected. The HP17 is also an excellent refill candidate since all of the ink chambers are isolated and there is no chance of cross contamination by overfilling. Having said that; unlike black ink I have had compatibility issues when refilling the HP17 but recently refilled an HP17 with no problems (using newer ink refill kit) so you never really know. Maybe my bad experiences were due to using clearance priced refill kits, but ink refill kits are so inexpesive your financial risk is minimal if the process produces off colored ink. Even IF that happens the older printers allow you to print from either the black or ink unit, and the funky color ink cartridge can be used for any project that doesn't true to color ink, and even off color ink (cyan, magenta, yellow) can get close to producing the color black. We all realize the ink jet cartridge was the biggest financial coup by any manufacturer, since once you crunch the numbers the cost per gallon for this "colored water" is around $8,000 per gallon. I've opened up the smaller sized HP units (HP 21 and 22) and the tiny foam inserts were only partially discolored, meaning HP couldn't afford to put 1.5 teaspoons of ink in each color chamber. I believe 1 teaspoon of ink is their limit.Read full review
You can't beat genuine HP printer cartridges. They fit, works when you replace the cartridge the first time and prints more pages than generic cartridges.

My own experience with HP 15 ink cartridges, is that they work years beyond their warranty expiration dates. On occasion I've had to resort to soaking the nozzle area in very warm water, or even using a little liquid glass cleaner to dissolve ink, but I don't recall ever having one fail to work.

The cartridge seems to be printing normally although sometimes, faint script appears followed by clear sharp script.

I was nervous as the last 'retired' cartridge did not work. I cleaned and cleaned the head and could shake it and hear the liquid ink...but no go. This one worked great! Thank you!

A good buy if ink not dried out. Have not used it yet but it should be ok. Older ink may not be a good buy as could be dried out. It is for backup when needed.
