I own few films on DVD, but this and Before Sunrise are two I keep and will watch again. I will preface this with saying that I can understand how some people will be bored, not because this is a boring film, but because many are accustomed to Hollywood effects and schmaltz. In our American culture of pathologizing and medicating all forms of unhappiness, Botox injections, obsessing with appearing "perfect" and spending more time communicating with absent people via mobile devices and online, Jesse and Celine's characters seem more authentic than many actual people because, flawed, vulnerable, awkward and broken, they still connect and make no effort to conceal who they are. Julie Delpy is stunning as Celine and full of very human contradictions. She is both graceful and awkward, idealistic and jaded, anti-pollution yet smokes, responsible and a dreamer. Many of the qualities we loved about her in Before Sunrise are still there; she didn't outgrow them but grew into them realizing that the struggles, observations and hopes that can make one emotional is what makes life beautiful. She laughs about all Parisians being unhappy, yet we get a sense that there is an allure in a romantic, intelligent brooding. She takes action by working for an organization similar to Greenpeace removing her from the category of whiner. Ethan Hawke is convincing as the smitten American; we see both the free spirit he once was along with his current, settled on the surface self. The cinematography is fabulous. It's not as romantic as Before Sunrise and has fewer "distractions" like the drunken poet and old fortune teller (expect for the "party" in Celine's courtyard towards the end which was very enchanting), but still is full of Parisian charms and beautiful scenes. They are constantly on the move, turning corners, the clock also moving forward as they try and go back. It's an impossible feat to capture the past in real time outside of a book written by Jesse, so we are not allowed to get too comfortable. The slowly setting sun made me anxious and Celine keeps pointing out that he needs to catch his plane. Towards the end when they are walking up Celine's large and tall spiral stairway we get a sense of them rising above time, and they are both quiet as if aware that something big is about to happen. Like other reviewers have written, you can feel as though you are witnessing something real. It's a place on screen that takes you to a beautiful place inside and leaves you aching for more, from them, and in your own life.Read full review
Before Sunset, sequel to Before Sunrise, picks up a story of a couple that, from the beginning, you know belong together. Their lives, unlike the lives of most romantic comedy characters, are not simple, and the decisions they make, especially the married character played by Ethan Hawke, are tough. But it's the ring of truth and the seductiveness of their love that makes it work. The sense of place, as the characters wander through an insiders Paris, makes you long to visit the city even more than the films that bop between Parisian highlights. And the dialogue, smart and well thought out, has the ring of the authentic talk of two people attracted to one another for more than just physical reasons. Compatibility defines these two. And the ending is one of the more quietly romantic scenes I've witnessed in a film.Read full review
This is one of my favorite movies. It is an almost unknown gem. What can I say ? This is Artistic, and Realistic, and Philosophical about Romance and Love and Life. It is definitely a thinking person's movie. One must pay attention to the dialog and not tune out because there is so much "conversation". It shows that people who meet and share a special connection with each other share that special connection no matter how long a time may go by - they just magically "click", or connect, in that special way when they are together. It is something to be cherished and nurtured. This movie is for the Romantic, for the person who believes that no matter what may come in life, there is always hope. There are so many basic themes about our experiences in life as human beings that are covered here. The quintessential questions we all face relating to one's meaning and purpose in life and how to live one's life fully are brought to light, but brought up in such a natural and uncontrived way. This movie delves deeply, but doesn't get weighed down in heavy philosophical terms. The background is Paris, France and the feeling is one of peeking in through the keyhole at your best friends discussing their lives and longings. I could Feel their emotions , relate to everything they were saying about their lives, and cheer for them. I felt like they were my alter-ego. The ending is perfect for me...I wouldn't change a thing.Read full review
This is a real-time sequel to "Before Sunrise". It is 9 years later, in the movie and in real life... 2 people who had one magical night together in Vienna almost a decade before find themselves in Paris and run into eachother again. Their lives have both progressed and have had other marriages and careers and life experiences. They find themselves catching up on their lives since they had last met and finding a whole new magic. This movie is in a style of almost reality, real-time, documentary complete with awkward pauses and uncomfortable moments of little arguments and running out of things to say.... just as if two people had just met up again after 9 years. I would highly recommend seeing Before Sunrise first as this movie definitely builds off of that. This movie is sometimes painfully real and truely romantic with all of the complications that would come from the aftermath of one incredible night and the promise to meet again 1 year later that never happened.Read full review

English review at the end bottom: J'ai acheté ceci sans savoir précédemment n'importe quoi à son sujet, ne pas le savoir était une suite. In English: It Sucks!
Our summer cottage has electricity but no cable TV, so we have a bunch of DVD's for those inevitable rainy days. We watched the "preowned" Before Sunset DVD at home before storing it at the cottage and it was in perfect condition besides being a smart and delightfully entertaining RomCom.

what if? what if you had the chance to go back and say everything you wanted to say to the one that got away? it movie is, in part, about going after what you really want in life. mostly, about not settling for what is expected. overall a very enchanting film. love this movie - great script; great accuracy re: conversation between the sexes. you pull for the characters; you are drawn into the story [it also helps to watch the prequel: BEFORE SUNSET] it is a 9 or [10yr?] difference between movies.
I needed this to complete "The Before Trilogy". Well worth watching again and again.

I got this movie, because I had seen the prequel to it and being a lover of Richard Linklater films I couldn't help but be interested. It has a very high rating on imdb.com as well (8.1) so I couldn't say no. I was satisfied with the movie, I thought it was a great look at how people who truly have a connection hang on and never forget about one another. I think it was way too short though, there could be more to the story but I guess the ending leaves you at the edge of your seat and then lets you fall off.
