About this product

Product Information

'They call me a madman but compared to Pete Way, I'm out of my league.' - Ozzy Osbourne There are rock memoirs and then there is this one. A Fast Ride Out of Here tells a story that is so shocking, so outrageous, so packed with excess and leading to such uproar and tragic consequences as to be almost beyond compare. Put simply, in terms of jaw-dropping incident, self-destruction and all-round craziness, Pete Way's rock'n'roll life makes even Keith Richards's appear routine and Ozzy Osbourne seem positively mild-mannered in comparison. Not for nothing did Nikki Sixx, bassist with LA shock-rockers Motley Crue and who 'died' for eight minutes following a heroin overdose in 1988, consider that he was a disciple of and apprenticed to Way. During a forty-year career as founding member and bassist of the venerated British hard rock band UFO, and which has also included a stint in his hell-raising buddy Ozzy's band, Pete Way has both scaled giddy heights and plunged to unfathomable lows. A heroin addict for more than ten years, he blew millions on drugs and booze and left behind him a trail of chaos and carnage. The human cost of this runs to six marriages, four divorces, a pair of estranged daughters and two dead ex-wives. Latterly, Way has fought cancer, but has survived it all and is now ready to tell his extraordinary tale. By turns hilarious, heart-rending, mordant, scabrous, self-lacerating, brutally honest and entirely compulsive, A Fast Ride Out of Here will be a monument to rock'n'roll debauchery on an epic, unparalleled scale and also to one man's sheer indestructability.

  • Fascinating insight

Having seen UFO first (and my first ever gig) on the Strangers in the Night Tour with 'Tonka' Chapman on guitar to replace Schenker I thought I'd give the book a speculative punt. Pete Way was manic onstage. UFO not long after played Top of the Pops miming to Doctor Doctor (a fact omitted from the book), released with a B-Side including Try Me. I've bought the Strangers 6 CD pack to get a true feel for the tour and the extended version of Strangers is a classic.Having left UFO I saw Pete on stage with Michael Schenker at Dudley and he looked a little worse for wear but received a loud ovation form the crowd. I lived in Ponders End while at College, so amusing to read about his being in the local Athletics Club. I do like his reminiscences which gain extra depth by being segwayed with comments from his brother, and members of various bands, including UFO.. The writing is easy to read and the stories exactly what you'd expect from a "larger than life" character, and I found it an enjoyable read while at the same time I was able to recall the album releases as the autobiography is pretty much chronological, the coming and going of band members etc. Pete is right, once they moved from Hipgnosis for album art the covers were rubbish (especially Mechanix). Some "new" info about certain events. David 'Kid' Jenson on his Friday show discussing UFO'S "Strangers" but in the main the release of the single Doctor Doctor summed them up - "A study in perseverance" Well worth a speculative purchase!

  • Interesting insight into how selfish people can be

I read this in 3 days. An easy read, but disturbing to know what money, drink and drugs can do to people. A member of one of my favourite bands doesn't hold back on taking his band mates apart in a no holds barred book.
