About this product

Product Information

This is a wonderful, atmospheric, historical, imaginative, oozing little study of everything that goes on under London, from original springs and streams and Roman amphitheatres to Victorian sewers and gang hide-outs. The depth below is hot, much warmer than the surface and this book tunnels down through the geological layers, meeting the creatures that dwell in darkness, real and fictional rats and eels, monsters and ghosts. There is a bronze-age trackway under the Isle of Dogs, Wren found Anglo-Saxon graves under St Pauls, and the monastery of Whitefriars lies beneath Fleet Street. In Kensal Green cemetery there was a hydraulic device to lower bodies into the catacombs below Welcome to the lower depths . A door in the plinth of statue of Boadicea on Westminster Bridge leads to a huge tunnel, packed with cables - gas, water, telephone. When the Metropolitan Line was opened in 1864 the guards asked for permission to grow beards to protect themselves against the sulphurous fumes, and called their engines by the names of tyrants - Czar, Kaiser, Mogul and even Pluto, god of the underworld. Going under London is to penetrate history, to enter a hidden world. The vastnes

Am immensely impressed with this seller. Order received in excellent condition and less than two days between placing my order and receiving the item. Now that is what I call excellent service. Book in better condition than most new books sold at my local Waterstones and very reasonably priced. In fact, I’d go as far as to say excellent value for money. I can’t recommend this seller highly enough. Superb customer service. Brilliant. Great packaging and even better than described.

I ordered 2 copies and the first arrived very quickly and as described. The invoice stated that the second was being sent separately. I tried tracking but it only referred to the first book. After over a week I contacted them and received an e-mail telling me they didn't have any copies and would refund me. So I've had to access another copy from elsewhere for my son.

  • Comprehensive and full of detail and yet very concise

This book is the companion to the author's book on London, covering the geology, rivers, springs and all kinds of man made infrastructure of London beneath the surface. I found it difficult to put the book down and finished it very shortly after delivery. Anyone who is familiar with the names of roads, streets and places or underground and overground railway stations in London and wondered about the origin or etymology of the word can find many of the answers in this book.

  • Fascinating read.

Brilliant book by the historian- really interesting read on an unusual but compelling subject. Peter Ackroyd’s love of London shines through in his novels and factual history books. Well worth a read - something different but fascinating.
