Semi-classic Genesis.....
Genesis was starting to go the way of pop-rock when this album was released. Sadly, IMHO, this album marks the end of Genesis' best music. The days of "Selling England by the Pound", "Seconds Out" , "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway", Foxtrot and other earlier releases are gone. So was Peter Gabriel, replaced by the vocals of (drummer) Phil Collins. Many "newbies" to the music of Genesis will probably appreciate their later stuff, but in my mind this album represents the last of the band's early (and best) days. A Trick of the Tail seems to be a transition album from the wilder, more creative, eclectic, exploratory music that Genesis was known for to the more mainstream, pop rock & roll that became their MO during the latter part of their career.
