I actually decided to buy this movie because of how often it gets referenced as a test disc for home theater enthusiasts. The surround sound mixing is superb and all the audio is shot on location, not sound effects created in a studio. That creaking wood ship you hear is the film crew actually on a wooden ship recording the sounds it makes at sea. Real canon and musket fire as well. That level of authenticity is sorely lacking in film. The video aspect is also very good, probably faulted for not being pristine like so many movies show today because it is an actual film transfer with all the grain and noise present in that medium. New movies are shot digitally and cleaned up during post production for that shiny perfect look. Film is not a negative, it actually preserves the finer details during low light better than digital (and there are many dimly lit scenes in this movie). Like a good whiskey, little details need appreciation in order to understand the whole. As for the movie itself, I enjoyed it very much. What more can be said about something that is purely subjective? Great acting of course, a compelling narrative, and an interesting look into a little understood period of history. Apparently there was a whole series of books this movie was derived from and it should have resulted in more films being made, but instead we get sequels to hackneyed trash like Pirate's of the Caribbean. A cheap addition to any movie lover's collection, and if you don't like it give it to a friend, perhaps they will appreciate it.
