I reviewing the 2006 Complete Box Set. It haves a different cover. Never seen the 2008 edition but 2006 was made by ADV (the same as 2008. I bought this for $60-70 range. Plot:Macross (1984)'s hero is teenager Hikaru Ichigo, an air show pilot. He is invited by his sempai (mentor) and military pilot, Roy Focker, to the celebration of the launching of SDF Macross, a crashed spaceship that was restore as the flagship of U.N. Spacey. However a malfunction on the ship causes the main gun to fire into an alien fleet. Hikaru is forced to join the military. But Macross is more complex than this. His confused dedication and arguements of what purpose/duty of the military shown through his love relationships of the two female main characters, Lynn Minmay and Misa Hayase. Minmay is alot like Hikaru; the circustamances she is in causes her to change socially and personally. She becomes a famous singer on the ship and her relationship with Hikaru is a off/on again due to their conflicting scheludes/life styles. Misa is a military tatician/bridge officer of the Macross. Through very dedicated to her work and bossy in the beginning, she starts to question if what she is going is right. Art: Character/mechas designs are beautiful. The artists of the show were wise not to confirm to the fashions of the time and try to make everyone very normal (the miltiary uniforms look like uniforms). Through Minmay does have questionable outfits (like her green military khakhi with red heel shoes?), Minmay most memorable scences contain good outfits and makes her more of an adorable character to the series. Animation was bad sometimes. Roy Focker had Hikaru's uniform colors in one scence and Misa's uniform part kept changing colors. Plot issues: But the plot does have issues. Chessy plot points such a character's marriage to an alien and destoryed post-Earth arc) makes the series look too hasty written and sometimes a joke when they are trying to be serious. Though Macross staff try to tell their audience the story taken with a grain of salt, the philosophical themes of the story make the bad scences all more obvious. Voiceovers: Japanese are very good. English is mostly good. The only thing I'd questioned was the recasting of Mari Iijima as Minmay. Iijima was hard to understand due to her highly accented secondary English. But she is able to pull it off with her treatment of the character and interaction with the other characters. Music: Minmay's voiceover (Mari Iijima) does a good job singing and writing some of the songs for the show. The songs are catchy, and you will remember them and sing them long after viewing the show. The staff was wise in incorporating the songs into the plot of the show instead of being very random. Alot of the songs expresses what Minmay feels during the progress especially with her relationship with Hikaru. Much a good use of talent/music. Extras: The extras included commentaries of the English translators and voiceovers over. Also episode guides such contain behind the scences info of how the show was developed/secrets (which are very interesting). Iijima helps with her memories of how the show was originally done when she did in Japan. Very useful for fans or people doing research on the anime industry. Plot, great songs, characters makes Macross a buy for any viewer of anime. If you never seen it, you are living under the rock and need to see this groundbreakig seriesRead full review
This series marked my youth but with this restored original version and subtitled, I rediscover it. The songs are wonderful. A true masterpiece for me, forever.
