I have tried out a number of the camera on the Nex range of Sony Cameras, the Nex 3 & 5 are very good for hobbyists, reasonable quality and with adapters, it opens up a word great lenses, old and new. The nex-3 is 14mp, and let due to sensor size and use of an average lens you get a far greater quality than a good end compact with more megapixels. even with an old m42 lens, or even a CCTV lens, you can get some great shots. So you can get these cameras for a very cheap price now, and a vintage lens may work out well for you, myself I've used Pentax lenses and found very good results. street photography results aren't bad for a camera that's been around for a fair number of years. If you go for this camera at the right price, about £50 with cable but no lens then I think you'll get good results. Alternatively look up the later models in the nex range or for higher end camera look up the A5000(£110 used and without lens) or the A5100(about £300 used and without lens). Small mirrorless cameras off a sense of the DSLR market minus weight, cost, and options, so settings are streamlined and so will lack features with DSLRs, but you'll get what you need for college or hobby activity. I gave the Nex 3 the star rating 5, because it is cheap and effective, and unless you've got the megapixel fever, you'll be fine with the 14mp camera.Read full review

Pros: - APS-C Sensor (good image quality, good low-light performance) - HD Video Recording - Good for adapted lenses (short flange distance) - Easy to use (small number of buttons, intuitive button placement, well thought-out menus) Cons: - Too few dedicated buttons (you have to dig through menus too much; there is no ISO dial, no dedicated exposure compensation dial, no dedicated mode dial) - Only proprietary flash connector (no hot shoe) - Base ISO at 200 - Only 720p video recording

Fantastic camera, easy to use but with full manual when I want to use it. Came with 24-55 lense and is clear and compact.
So you're looking at getting a sony nex3? first of all, no doubt you have seen the sony nex5, the only difference is the hd video, the nex5 records at 1080p and the nex3 records at 720p, right, now that is out of the way i can tell you what i think about this camera, I have had the camera a few weeks now and im running it through the sony 18-55 lens (also reviewed by myself - its good). Right where to start with the camera, first of all its tiny, so light, im sure the lens is bigger and weighs more then the camera, no joke. Shall we start with the features? ok, this may take some time... i have updated the firmware on the camera (via the sony website - easy to do and well worth it) ok list of features. interchangeable lenses 720p hd 14.2 mp full size cmos sensor removable flash tilt screen one ouch recording for hd HDR in camera (combines 3 shots to create HDR) This camera also has a twilight mode in which it enables you to take photos in low light without a flash by combining 7 shots and layering them to create one image, this works very well. Panorama (4 directions to choose from) 3D Panorama (yes it takes 3d pictures) Photo modes including black and white, retro, posterize, toy camera, black/white and one colour (very cool photos in this mode) oh all these modes also work on video. Smile shutter (so much fun) you dont press the shutter, the camera does it for you when people smile, makes for some very natural smiles and none of that forced "say cheese" fakeness you see in pictures, this camera does everything a DSLR camera does and alot more on top, i cannot express how happy i am with this camera, its incredible, yes its a bit pricey, but its well worth it, i urge you to head down to your local camera shop or sony shop and try one even if that all you do, its amazin, you wont want to put it down.Read full review
A fantastic little camera. Great high ISO performance, Focus Peaking, Live View, Focus magnification. A short register distance allows for cheap adaptors to fit a huge variety of lens mounts to the NEX. An awesome tool for using older, Manual lenses. My only issue with the camera is the constantly exposed sensor - You will get up close and personal with a Sensor cleaning kit very soon.
