Before circa 1975, almost all recordings of this opera used the Rimsky-Korsakov version, re-arranged and re-orchestrated from Mussorgsky's original. Since then, the opposite situation exists: no one seems to use the Rimsky version any more. How tastes change! Of the older Rimsky recordings, this one is definitely the most beautiful. The orchestra is superb, Karajan's conducting/interpretation is richly romantic, and the cast is uniformly fine. In Ghiaurov's reading of the title role, one may miss the dramatic nuances of Christoff or London, but his rich and melifluous singing is very satisfying. All in all, one of the best Boris recordings available.
