About this product

Product Information

Zack Mayo (Richard Gere) has nothing--the son of an alcoholic, indifferent military father, he's grown up in the Philippines living on top of a brothel. But after college he decides he wants more and, despite his father's mockery, enrolls in the navy's Officer Candidate School to become a jet pilot. His sergeant, brilliantly played by Louis Gossett Jr., makes his life a living hell from day one, but Zack won't quit. The candidates are warned to stay away from the local girls looking for naval husbands, but Zack and his bunkmate, Sid (David Keith), find themselves falling for two friends, Paula (Debra Winger) and Lynette (Lisa Blount), who work at the local paper mill. Zack fights his feelings for Paula, determined to let nothing sway him from his goals. But as the hellish weeks of training go by, Zack begins to see that maybe he can't do it alone--and that what's getting him through are his friends in the ranks, and the girl he's been pushing away. Widely acclaimed at the time of its release, director Taylor Hackford's inspiring film is a romance for the ages.

  • A True Classic and What a Stunning Ending!

The characters in this movie draw you in so completely that you feel you are there along beside them in their moments of joys, triumphs and heartaches. Richard Gere plays the hard nosed officer in training so completely that you cant help but cheer for him even during his mishaps. David Keith does such a beautiful job portraying his best friend and fellow commrade and your heart just breaks for him. Debra Wingers smokey voice and look of next girl charms leave you rooting for her and Gere time and again. Lou Gossett Jr does his job of Commanding Officer so well that I nearly wanted to salute him myself! All in all, a very much must have to anyones Library collection! No matter how many times you see this movie...the ending gets you every time!

  • Officer and a Gentleman

I have always loved watching this movie. While my wife was alive we would watch it together and cheer when the white knight comes and rescues the princess.

  • Only the best make it.

The contrast and conflict of characters which Gere and Gossett jr. create is absolutely stellar. The story is good, but at times can get a bit slow moving or dull. However, it's worth watching this entire movie for it's message. Only strong will and determination make the final grade, so if it's motivation you need, watch this one...a few times, at least.
