This book is told as one would tell a story - clearly and factually, but it is TRUE. Gives a non-Chinese person a real insight into the hard and harsh life of Chinese peasants under the thumb of local appointed officials who are often corrupt thugs who do not stop at beatings, arrests and murder to get one more penny of tax money out of poor peasants. Stories tell of peasants who appeal to higher authority and often get no satisfaction - indeed are sometimes arrested and tortured. Makes me doubly glad to live in a free country. Every American should read this book!
