Seller notes: “Good-Very Good overall antique cond: Only missing the top leather hand grasp, which had long ago ... “Good-Very Good overall antique cond: Only missing the top leather hand grasp, which had long ago torn away. The latch hook is also missing but the slightly oxidized latch hoop is still present. This nearly 200 yr-old, very rare, hand made, wooden coffin case for a violin & bow, was recently discovered in an estate in Nashua, southern NH, along the northern MA border. Nashua was an early NH settlement & the violin coffin case was realized by a cabinet maker sometime between 1835-1855, well before the outbreak of the US Civil War. It's shaped like a coffin & is made of most likely local, milled pine boards. Each side & the chamfered top & bottom sidewalls are each made of single pcs or boards of pine. The violin case still has its orig brass hinges. The inside of the nat aged pine case interestingly has a hand painted black ink brush drawing of what appears to be a Scottish Terrier dog & is signed H.A.P. The case has cut-outs on each end for a long bow. It remains absolutely untouched.”
