About this product

Product Information

In 1607, three ships sailed across the Atlantic to the shores of what became known as Jamestown, Virginia. The arrival of these Europeans changed forever the history of the native people already living peacefully in this fertile country. Writer-director Terrence Malick, who has been waiting 25 years to tell this story, finally gets his chance in the breathtaking epic THE NEW WORLD. Colin Farrell stars as Captain John Smith, a British mutineer facing execution who finds a new purpose--and a dangerous love--in this new land. Smith falls for the young and beautiful Pocahontas (Q'Orianka Kilcher, in her first major role), daughter of the Indian chief Powhatan (August Schellenberg), laying the groundwork for trouble ahead. The Indians are both fascinated and frightened of the Europeans, not sure whether they are friend or foe. Suspicion, desire, greed, lust, and power soon combine to make them mortal enemies. Using natural lighting, carefully reconstructed forts (James Fort) and villages (Werowocomoco), realistic weaponry, fabulous makeup and costumes, and even a re-creation of the Algonquin language, Malick has made a majestic historical drama that transports viewers back to early 17th century America. Supplemented by James Horner's (BRAVEHEART, TITANIC) lush, percussion-based score and Emmanuel Lubezki's gorgeous photography--especially of night scenes on the river--THE NEW WORLD is a compelling examination of the very beginning of American history, told by a master filmmaker who has made just three previous, highly regarded films (BADLANDS, DAYS OF HEAVEN, THE THIN RED LINE) since 1973.

    Excellent movie

Great movie. DVD came in good quality and never skipped. The case was old and had old used movie stickers on them, which is annoying, but I guess it doesn't really matter. This is the best story of Pocahontas. Very artistic movie. More music than dialogue.

  • Beautiful! Not What Expected & That's a Good Thing!

I kept putting off watching this movie. I really do not care for the flavor-of-the-week bad boy actor and Colin Farrell had not made very good choices in movie roles IMO. The trailer/previews made it look like another mindless action/adventure movie - wow, was I wrong! What I expected is probably what others expected, which is why so many people ended up not liking it and it did not seem to make a bigger splash in the theaters. Yes, this is not a fact-based movie but it makes for a better story. John Smith and a "naturals" princess fall in love but he leaves and she is crushed but moves on. To me it was not "slow" but it does take its time, the scenery is as much a character as the humans are. Dialogue is not needed when Q'Orianka Kilcher is on screen, on ...

  • Capt. John Smith and Pocahontas

As much as I love history, this movie was VERY slow. I am sure that it is probably as close as you get to the accuracy of what life was actually like when Capt. John Smith landed in the new world and Pocahontas was there to save his life. If you read about the real life of these 2 characters it is very unlikely that they had a romance. The movie also failed to let you know how Pocahontas died, just that she became ill. She contracted small pox. Something that the English brought to the New World which killed off many early settlers and Indians. Sad truths come from this movie, the hardship of the early settlers and the killing of innocent Indians to gain land. I am sometimes embarrassed to be a white American, it is movies like this that really make me feel bad about American ...

  • For Once A Movie That Catches You Off Guard & Surprises

Once in a blue moon, you finally stumble upon a movie that seems to mesmerize your senses. This one is it. I was only disappointed that I missed this one on the big screen. Too Bad. The majesty of this movie captures you by surprise and makes you start wondering how everything in this new world went so hay-wire. Never, in a thousand years, would you actually think that this guy would actually show up again tracked by ancestry. However, this is not the case. Tracking a close cousin's lineage has yielded Captain John Smith's name all the way to his records documented from his own death, life, ownership records, wives and such, including records of an native American Indian Princess named Pocahontas. This finding perhaps, somewhat impressed me, regardless of the fact that ...

  • A New World

Thought the movie was very entertaining, remember its a movie, made in Hollywood, so do not take it as fact. The Music by James Horner was excellent, I am a big fan of his work. The movie offers a small insight into how the explorers came to America and how they absolutely runied a Paradise. Not to mention how they actually mistreated THE REAL AMERICANS .......The Indians........It was my kind of movie but I can easily see how someone would not care for it. I just bought the DVD after renting from Blockbuster, so I give it 2 thumbs up for content, and background music...
