About this product

Product Information

Director Bruce Beresford's abiding fascination with the clash of cultures is apparent in this adaptation of Brian Moore's novel of a Jesuit missionary who leaves France in 1634 to bring the word of Jesus to the Huron tribe of rugged northern Quebec. The film, which stars Lothaire Bluteau as LaForgue, casts aside the revisionist notion of the Native American as an enlightened being, superior to Caucasian interlopers, depicting the Huron world as one of ugliness and harshness. The missionary's arrogance blinds him to the Indians' preference for their own religious rituals over the faith he is attempting to thrust upon them. Yet, in his new proximity to nature and exposure to primitive mores that shock him, the priest begins to feel the bonds of his asceticism and question his faith. Finally, after being captured and tortured by a party of Iroquois, he begins to evince the compassion with which the conversion of the Hurons becomes possible. The tragic ramifications of this process are only revealed many years later. Bluteau is excellent in this bleak film, which includes some of the most meticulously researched representations of Native American life ever put on film.

What an amazing seller!! When they noticed I love the press kit which was very carefully packed in several layers of bubble wrap (to prevent breakage of the DVD and creasing of the folder and notes during shipment) and then shipped securely in a sturdy box. The item is exactly as described - the press kit includes a folder, production notes and film credits. The seller is excellent! A++++++++!

  • 1991 motion picture about Indian and European cultures

A superb film set in 17th century "New France" (Quebec) following a Jesuit Missionary through his efforts to convert Huron Indians to Christianity. This film is a first rate study of the contrast between North American Indians and the European culture of the 1600's. I found no politically correct politics in the film. Very accurate, very sobering. If you are a history buff,(as I am)and especially a student of American Indian studies, then you will enjoy this film. It shows the unromantic, non-idealized sides of both cultures and brings home the good and bad of the meeting of two very different ways of thinking, and ways of life. The cinematography and acting is as good as it gets. The film was well researched in terms of language and clothing, weapons and geography. I saw the English ...

  • Black Robe

This is a great story about a part of the "unknown" history of North America. There are some scenes with nudity and sex, but they are portrayed in the normality of the times of the Aboriginal Peoples in the same way we portray scenes and snapshots of life on Discovery, and National Geographic etc. The courage of the Christian Missionaries is recorded well. This film truly shows the beginning of the end of the native aboriginal cultures and the fervour of European society and culture to impose itself on them.

  • Fascinating

A truly different look at the early days of interaction between colonists and native Americans. Conflicts of religion, culture and determination in early French Canada.

  • History in it's harshest revealed

Kind of a slow beginning. It goes back and forth to the time that Black Robe, the Jesuit Priest of the title was in France before coming to northern Canada in the early 1600's. Seemed Very Authentic in costumes and Native Indians. Showed how cruel life could be in the ministry of converting the Natives. It's best to watch this one with the English subtitles upon viewing the DVD.
