    Digital WD Red 3TB,Internal,5400 RPM,8.89 cm (3.5")

Welcome to my review for a Western Digital WD Red 3TB,Internal,5400 RPM,8.89 cm (3.5") (WD30EFRX).3TB WD Hardrive, first opinions and thoughts were it is a large capacity drive very quiet fast for its speed the price was acceptable, Western Digital and other manufacturers have come along way since the early days of IDE drives. I have had no problems with the drive and would be very happy to buy another one, well worth every penny I paid for it. In a nutshell perfect for my needs

  • WD Red is perfect for NAS

Please ignore reviews claiming the 3TB+ versions have 'issues' or that Windows 7+ has a partition limit of 2TB. This is wrong! Google "Windows support for hard disks that are larger than 2TB" to learn about GPT versus MBR partitions. Also ignore reviews claiming only 750GB (746GB more precisely) is usable. This problem is caused by older hardware trying to access the drive, in my case an old external USB 2.0 dock. Once I upgraded to a newer (and USB 3.0) dock I had no problem using the full capacity of the drive. Also ignore reviewers claiming the advertised capacity is only 2.73TB and not 3TB (in Windows). For many years now Windows has continued to use the wrong terminology when describing file/folder/disk sizes. Google "the difference between TB and TiB" if you want to understand more ...

  • Pleasantly surprised with a refurbed drive

I was a bit unsure of buying a refurbed drive but zero complaints so far. I guess it might not last as long as a brand new drive but since it is replacing a dead drive in a RAID array I know if it goes I should not loose data so providing it lasts a reasonable time I'm definitely happy. Well packaged for shipment also.

  • Arrived faster than stated

Ordered this to try to revive a NAS HDD that died overnight. Arrived in a few days from Germany (nicely packed) and within minutes was fitted to my hard drive which did not work. I knew it won't work but I was hoping it might. Removed the PCB and swapped the BIOS chip with the one on my board and Voila, IT was alive.

  • Good drive at excellent price

While not a new drive, it passes all the tests and is well within its design life. For what I need it for it is an excellent choice. It is used in a RAID-1 array so a slightly higher chance of failure is tolerable, though Iā€™m not expecting a failure any time soon. It not only makes economic sense, but also environmental sense to recycle these complicated devices full of precious metals. If your drive application has redundancy and is not mission critical - ie most applications - this should surely be the first choice for a new or replacement drive.
