What’s good about this set? Well, for anyone who grooves on spectacular voices singing wonderful music, pretty much everything about it is ‘good.’ Or, more correctly, great! It isn’t only that you get 27 discs with the clarity and joy of early Pavarotti as recorded by Decca. You get lots of Sutherland, too, and Freni and Caballé and Milnes and Fischer-Dieskau and Pears, Monica Sinclair, Nicolai Ghiaurov … . The meat of 11 operas plus the Verdi Requiem and separate discs with selected arias and concert excerpts. Accompanying it is a lovely book covering Pavarotti’s life and early career along with details of each of the operas included in this super set. Yes, there will always be arguments about Pavarotti: Was his the greatest tenor — or maybe even voice — of the last century? That’s a matter of taste. What cannot be denied, though, is that the sound that came from him touched hearts and imaginations. More than any other, I think, he had the sun in his voice. These recordings, beautifully remastered, give you that sun, and so much more.Read full review
