Etrex Legend Easy to use for basic functions. Fast satellite acquisition after initial use in your area. Has Trouble finding satellites in heavy canopy( like all the inexpensive units) so I sometimes have to locate a thin spot in tree canopy or field and wait a few minutes. VERY IMPORTANT: after finding satellites when you walk 50-100 feet and you’re sure you’ve got an accurate direction from your pointer make a note of the heading so you use your magnetic compass when the gps looses the satellite connection until it locks on again. Not the unit to have if you are going to be doing serious navigation in heavy canopy. I carry the Legend turkey and deer hunting and ALWAYS have a separate magnetic compass. Battery life is very good for two AA batteries and runs on rechargeable NMIH batteries. Overall I am very pleased with the Garmin EtrexRead full review

The click stick on the front of the unit toggles all ways correctly, but the push down feature did not work at all when I received it, I checked online for similar problems with other units and found that repeated pushes will sometimes repair the problem. After some time the unit began working. It still doesn't work every time I push the click stick but after several attempts, it usually works. Other than that the unit is great. and was a good price as well.

I was looking for a small, light, low cost GPS with basic features and good battery life. I wanted a GPS to aid me in wilderness travels, hiking and general outdoor use in new areas that I did not already know well. The eTrex worked great on long weekends of occasional use with-out the need of changing the AA batteries. This is due to the very basic functions and lack luster features. Not bad, just basic. The black and white screen worked will enough but in dusk conditions I felt the screen was a little hard to read. The lack of color made the screen look "busy" when looking at areas with lots of details, roads or trails. The size is perfect - feels great in your hand. Not flimsy or too small. The size also matches a lot of point and shoot camera cases so you have lots of options on carry cases. My only and major dislike is the lack of contour lines on the maps. For cross country wilderness travel this is must! Those lines reveal all the details of land features that I use to plan routes and trails. Overall - if you can use a basic GPS for on and off road use and you dont need great detail of the surrounding area. This is a great option. If you need custom maps or heavy detail this may not be the GPS of choice.Read full review
Buyer Beware, Software version 2.0 on this device requires updates. You will need a serial port and an old outdated computer. This unit would be be used as a museum display. I is missing the basic map called "americas marine point basemap jan 2001" is missing on this device. Very expensive mistake on my part! I have one other Etrex Legend that I love, it works but is starting to misbehave this unit was supposed to replace that device. What a bummer! Instructions for uploading the new software to your eTrex Legend using Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT: 1. Download the appropriate self-extracting archive file for your eTrex Legend onto your hard drive. 2. Unzip the files in the archive by running the downloaded executable file. 3. Connect your eTrex Legend to a free serial port (Com 1, 2, 3, or 4) on your PC with a PC interface cable. 4. Turn on your eTrex Legend and ensure the Serial Data Format is set to "GARMIN". You can find this setting in Menu Page - Setup - Interface. 5. Change to the directory in which you unzipped the files, (i.e., C:GARMIN), and run the update program, updater.exe. Select the appropriate serial port and click "OK" to begin the software upload. During the upload, the eTrex Legend's display will indicate "SWT LOADING" The upload process should take 5-10 minutes to complete. When the upload is completed, the eTrex Legend will reset itself and turn on normally.Read full review

I have had many different handheld GPS units that I use for off roading, and I particularly like this one. Being an Etrex, it is fairly simple to use and people seem to be able to figure it out more quickly than some others. Compared to the lower lever models, it adds the ability to pan the map and includes a basic map, which is useful for reference but not great for street navigation. The newer and nicer Etrex units arhave color screens and charge via a USB port, but for the price this model really seems to fill a sweet spot. Look for a deal, and for under $50 this can be a great economical pocket sized GPS.
