I normally read "cozy" type mysteries but once in a while when a book is recommended over and over that is out of my whimsical lady sleuth range, I decide I better find out what the fuss is about. I read this about a year after it came out. Temperance Brennan, 40 something, a recovering alcoholic, divorced, and an American forensic anthropologist from the South,is now working in French-speaking Montreal. In a deeply disturbing and fascinating story, she is called upon to do an autopsy on a young girl who has been gruesomely murdered. This death will bring her to the dark side of the city....one in which an insane serial killer is stalking its victims. Tempe(as she is known), has demons of her own she is dealing with but now she has to put them aside to find a real demon who seems to have eluded the cops and is impossible to stop. Very chilling and not the kind of book I would read too often but so well written that it places you in the story. In real life, Reichs is a forensic anthropologist who has worked both in the South and in Montreal.Read full review
This was a gift. She loved it. The book was in good shape, just as was stated.

It threw me at first. I am a big fan of the show "Bones" so I was expecting the Tempe Brennan that I knew. This is not the same Tempe. But, the book was very good. Really got in to the forensics and the science. I really like these books. I have now bought about 9 more on ebay and I have enjoyed each one. I would recommend these to anyone who likes Robin Cook, Michael Crichton, even Dan Brown. They are a good read.
Kathy Reichs is very interesting. I am working on collecting the rest of the library that I have not yet read.

This is a well written and intelligent book. The details are precise, and the mystery has a strong story line that continues throughout the book. Not necessarily for the faint of heart due to the forensic details provided, but highly recommended for those who enjoy factual mystery/detective novels. Based on the excellent writing of Reichs, I have purchased the entire series.
Should be more stars--like 10!

A super murder mystery, a cultural experience, and probably the best first novel I've ever read. I've just finished her next book, and moving on to the 3rd... Ms Reichs is a force to be reckoned with!
Good book as most of Kathy Reichs' are. Great start to the whole world of Tempe. If you're just starting out with Kathy Reichs' books, don't expect it to mirror Bones (the TV show). some similarities, but not the same. GREAT book and series of books, though.
I watch the show faithfully so now I own two of the books that the show is based off. I recommend the book if you enjoy a good mystery and an education(I say education because you'll need a medical dictionary to figure out some of the words) but overall the books are a great read.
