Young Randy Cambell dreams of becoming New Zealand's greatest stuntman. He's determined to follow in his not-so death-defying father's footsteps, a stunt hero who died attempting the impossible. Randy's Uncle Norm, a bitter ex-Farmer of the Year, is a terrifying bully who won't allow Randy to perform any stunts at all. When Randy injures himself doing a bike stunt, Norm refuses to let him go see the Timaru Hellriders at the local stuntshow. While at the show, Randy meets the girl of his dreams, a spunky sexy tomboy called Tracy Jones. Before they can even finish their first conversation, a stunt goes horribly wrong and Tracy loses her leg. While Tracy recovers, Randy joins the Travelling Hellriders with their narcissistic and cowardly leader Dick Johansonson - a stunt legend who caused Tracy's amputation and has since lost his nerve. Like a carnival full of fuel-injected-freaks, the stuntshow tours small town New Zealand. Eventually Randy gets a lucky break and wows the crowd with a spectacular stunt. Soon his star begins to shine as Dick's begins to fade. When a dodgy businessman offers the troupe fame and fortune by performing insanely dangerous stunts, Dick agrees in a flash and signs the team's lives away. However everything turns to custard when Dick's fiance is killed during sex and Randy is blamed for her death. Dick secretly swears to settle the score and begins to plan the ultimate act of revenge; to destroy everything and everyone Randy has ever loved.
