Polibio fu un uomo politico greco, comandante della cavalleria della Lega Achea sconfitta dai romani a Pidna nel 168 a.C. Fu mandato in ostaggio a Roma, dove visse nella casa del vincitore di Pidna, Emilio Paolo e divenne amico del figlio Scipione Emiliano, il futuro distruttore di Cartagine. Fu consigliere militare di Scipione e lo accompagnò in vari viaggi nel Mediterraneo. Durante la sua vita Polibio vide la conquista del predominio assoluto nel Mediterraneo da parte di Roma e decise così di raccontare gli avvenimenti eccezionali che portarono alla supremazia di Roma e di studiare le ragioni di questo successo.
