  • Right part

Noticed my backup lights not working trying to install a backup camera. Backup lights not an inspection item in Texas, so who knows how long its been out. Miata groups noted that the backup switch usually has a life of 80,000 miles. Remember to use the old washer from the removed switch, or the new switch may interfere with shifting. New switch in, lights work and the backup camera.

  • Quick, eady, needed replacement.

It's not cheap, but it's cheaper than most other places. Having said that, this is a need replacement part when your back up lights are not working, and there is nothing wrong with your lights or your electrical system. Don't worry about trying to find a negative/positive terminal; that didn't matter when I installed it. Plug-and-play; plain and simple, and my back up lights are working again; now my fear of my MX-5 getting stuck in reverse is gone.

  • Miata Locked in Reverse

If you have a Miata long enough, there is a distinct chance that the transmission will end up locked in reverse. One of the culprits maybe the back-up light switch, which has been re-engineered, being on the third generation switch at this point. The plunger is longer with perhaps a little more spring tension to prevent the 5th and reverse shift rod to go past the detent. Along with a new plastic shifter bushing on the shifter and this new back-up switch, the transmission feels good as new. In fact, since this part can be installed without pulling the transmission, it might be excellent preventative maintenance.
