  • Great concept, poor implementation

I loved the idea and drooled at videos. I have a small studio mainly focusing on mixing and producing. The buttons on the top killed it for me and having no dedicated transport controls (stop, play, pause, record) just didn't feel right and I couldn't get used to it. On top of that, I use cubase and every time I restarted my Mac it would "forget" the UF8 so I had to go into settings and set it up every day. What a freaking pain. This was a known issue, and they claimed they would fix it, but by that time I was finished with two separate clients' tracks. The real kicker is I think I had a defective unit. It would randomly shut off and just freeze while in use. I'm no slack when it comes to gear and computers. I tried all the recommended solutions (Uninstaller, reinstall, update firmware, and so on) but it still never worked as expected. I have average size hands and the faders are space very far apart. This felt weird and awkward to me, as a live sound tech for years at churches and local music venues. If you've used an x32, Wing, M32 or similar, your natural reach for multiple faders seems spread way too far. It was a cool concept but there were so many bad things that happened, I would not recommend this to anyone serious about production and mixing. It is also terribly annoying that it goes through a fader dance with rainbow colors... CUTE. really cute SSL. But for professional work, it didn't seem to fit my studio. That's my opinion. I will say it was WELL-BUILT. It was sturdy.
