    Don't overlook this version of A Christmas Carol.

    Alistair Sim's version is justly celebrated as perhaps the definitive film version of the Dickens story, but Seymour Hicks' earlier version should not be ignored. This is a pretty good movie in its own right. Hicks is crusty, mean, and despicable in the beginning, but brought to his redemptive senses after the ghostly visits. This is a great story told many a time and oft with an entire panoply of stars in the lead role, whether live action, musicals or cartoons. One nice device is the non-embodiment of Jacob Marley whose physical appearance in some movies borders on the comic. Marley here is but a haunted voice. This DVD comes in both a colorized version and the original black and white. Recommended.

    Not Bah Humbug

    I write this review with a 'jaundiced eye' as I have yet to find a version of Charles Dickens 'Christmas Carol' that I did not enjoy. That being said, this rendition, starring Seymour Hicks, is one of the earlier versions and was only available in the original black and white for many years. I personally prefer color and feel that this colorized version is very well executed. But...for 'purists'...this DVD also includes the original B&W version so it will/should satisfy everyone. So, whether you prefer the color or B&W version, grab your favorite holiday sweets, sit back, and enjoy this SCROOGE DVD...you will not walk away uttering bah humbug.
