I bought it to protect the end of the lens assembly from dust and scratches - better to damage the filter than the end of the lens itself. Of course the neutral color filter does this job admirably, and does not affect my photographic image quality. N.B. When buying filters, get the correct diameter for the lens, (this one is 58mm).

I have many Nikon Manual and Auto Focus Lenses and I have always used Nikons own range of Filters and wouldn't even consider using 3rd party no name products for my optics, they are sometimes more expensive to buy but if you carefully shop around you can buy them for very reasonable prices such as this one, very highly recommended for consistent results

I bought one of these NC (neutral color) filters for each lens I own and for one purpose - to protect the lens. It is a whole lot cheaper and easier to replace a scratched filter than to buy a new lens. I recently bought a Nikon d7100 camera which I am learning how to use. From the limited number of pictures I've taken thus far, I do not see any added effects, the pictures are clear. In addition, from what I've read filters are not really needed since the camera can create these effects. Protection it is.
This absolutely beautiful and in my opinion a great investment as it protects the lens from scratches, easier to clean and does not come in the way of any photographs. I use it on my 50mm f/1.4 prime lens which is expensive in itself. The Nikon filter is made with high quality and hence no issues with photographs.
Clear uv fylter inventory problem as it was supposed to be a CPF.
